For over three weeks, a small vial of shimmering light orange liquid had been sitting on a shelf. It was a wish granted, but one that was as of yet untaken. It seemed like it was always looming in the corner of her vision as she worked, taunting and teasing. Day in and day out, August debated taking the given tonic, though fables and warnings of her part kept floating to her mind.
Be careful what you wish for.
It really didn’t help that the mages in question, cloaked in their anonymity, flat out warned that it would be painful for an indeterminate amount of time. It was practically the first thing on her mind when thinking about it, given that she had so much to work on and didn't know if it would actually incapacitate her or not. As the days wore on, though, the temptation grew stronger and stronger, to the point that the smith knew she wouldn't be able to resist the risk for much longer. Even without the pain, she knew there would be tears as the memories returned. People forgotten, places traveled, efforts long since come to fruition or failure.
The month was wearing on, and eventually she knew the time had come. Stocking up on supplies so that she could just stay home until getting through the pain, August hung a sighn on the door to her shop. Entrance by appointment only. Maybe one or two firends could get in, but that was it. Food, solitude, and plenty of work to distract herself with if needed, or accessable.
On the chosen day, she pulled the vial from the shelf, a bit shocked that it still held the same heat as it had on the day it had been given to her. Staring at it for a bit longer than intended, eventually she pulled the cork, afraid to even give it a sniff before bringing it to her lips and throwing her head back.
It burned immediately, from lips to stomach, and the heat never really went away. It wasn't bad, not yet, but there was the matter of the tincture taking hold soon that she had to worry about. Taking one last look at the vial, she dropped the spotless container into the sink, shuffling to her bedroom with a hand over her stomach...
