Melanie Pullen
Melanie Pullen, born in 1975, is an American self-taught photographer based in LA. Pullen is most famous for her series High Fashion Crime Scenes (above), which she published in her book in 2005. The photographs are inspired by actual LAPD and NYPD files, but Pullen clothed her models in haute couture to draw attention away from the brutality of the scenes and to the props (shoes, specifically) within them to mock society. “Beauty, violence… I like to play with what’s exploited by society,” Pullen said in an interview. “Especially in the United States, there’s this exploitation of tragedy especially prevalent around beauty. It’s not just the media – it’s an interest of society as a whole. There’s a ridiculousness in it.”
Pullen is also the first woman to have a solo show at the Leica Gallery in Beverly Hills.
