Driving through NaxosÂ
On our last full day in Naxos before heading back to Athens and then stateside, we rented a lovely little taxi-yellow car and did our own tour of some of the towns away from the main chora near the port.Â
We attempted to find Mount Zas where it is said Zeus hid from Cronus to avoid being eaten as he had witnessed this fate of his own siblings after being born in ever-colorful mythology. Unfortunately, it seems the cave was also a myth because after almost an hour of walking, climbing, reading faint red arrows directing us toward the site, and my breaking away from our trio to scale some rocks and see up ahead, we never found it.Â
But the views were breathtaking. So it was worth it.Â
Chalki was full of tiny streets and gorgeous squares reserved for dining tables and chairs in the open.Â
On our way from Chalki to Melanes, we saw one of the famed marble quarries as we zigzagged up and down the mountainous terrain. Nearby, we sought the famed abandoned statues left for centuries in the underbrush of thick and dry hills under the beating sun.Â
