This just in from the @librarycongress: “The Library of Congress and Every Child a Reader today announced the appointment of #MegMedina as the eighth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature for 2023-2024. Medina, a #Cuban-American, is the first #Latina to serve as National Ambassador in the program’s history. She succeeds #JasonReynolds, who served as the National Ambassador from 2020 through 2022. Medina’s books examine how culture and identity intersect through the eyes of young people. Her middle-grade #novel “#MerciSuárezChangesGears,” the first of three #books in a trilogy about the Suárez family, received the 2019 #NewberyMedal and was named a notable children’s #book of the year by the New York Times Book Review. My dear @megmedinabooks, that wonderful #Newbery-award winning #writer whose #novels I have had the joy to translate, is the proverbial gift that keeps on giving. That is literal. Yesterday, when I arrived home, I had a package waiting for me. It contained a framed certificate of the Gold Standard Selection Award and a golden pin from the @jrlibraryguild, alongside a beautiful handwritten note from #MegMedina, in which she says that she wants me to have this recognition to my translation of “Merci Suárez se pone las pilas” because it “rightfully belongs” to me “for all the love, attention, and concern I gave to the translation.” (Yes, of course that tears of gratitude made their timely appearance as I read the postcard.) I adore Meg. And, if you know her or have read her work, you adore her, too. I also love speaking with her. And we recently did just that for the #podcast “#AskALibrarian,” hosted by @juliewriteswords. You can listen to our conversation on the link in my bio. I also hosted conversations with several of my colleagues and their English and Theory of Knowledge students about the art and the craft of literary translation. Scroll to the right for some photos. Today, I had the privilege of sharing the stage at the fabulous @planetworddc with my dear @megmedinabooks. And by that I mean my dear #NewberyAward winner #MegMedina! This event was coordinated by the indefatigable @kelp52, with the enthusiastic support from @aobfound. I’ve had the joy of translating Merci Suárez Changes Gears and Merci Suárez Can’t Dance. And that means that Meg and I have a friendship that is at least 800-pages long. Last night, Meg, Valerie Block,(my wife —not on social media!), and I took an Uber to “Cuba Libre.” We had a great time. I hope that one day we will be able to go to #CubaLibre, without the quotation marks. Apropos of that, while over one hundred fifth graders and their teachers from two local schools entered the auditorium, we played #PatriaYVida. I told the audience that today we commemorate the first time that the #Cuban national anthem was sung on the island. And that was the reason why we were playing the song that has become a de facto anthem for #Cubans everywhere, while one of its composers remains in prison in #Cuba, precisely for singing that song. Then we talked about the #MerciSuárez trilogy, and the joys and the challenges of translating such beautiful, polyphonic, and multilayered #books. Some days, I can’t believe my life. The #book was first published in the United States on 26 March 2013 through Candlewick Press and is the winner of the 2013 Cybils Award and the 2014 Pura Belpré Award.
