Arduino sketches (software projects) include a J1939 network scanner, and a simple SAE J1939 to USB Gateway application with associated Windows GUI (Visual Studio C# project). The collection of sketches is concluded by the ARD1939 project, a fully functional SAE J1939 protocol stack for the Arduino Uno and Mega 2560.

Well, neither the Mega 2560 nor the Due support RS485, the basis for the J1708 hardware layer, directly, meaning you need an RS485 breakout board. For our tests, we used our RS485 Breakout Board 5VDC.

The RS485 Board features the SP485/MAX485 transceiver on board, with integrated pin headers and connectors to support multiple communication interfaces. It is designed to operate with a 5 VDC power supply.

The jCOM.CAN.2560, a CAN bus interface for the Arduino 2560, is not an Arduino shield in the common sense. The board incorporates an ARM processor with CAN transceiver for use on the Arduino 2560 while allowing the operation with any Arduino-compatible shield. The jCOM.CAN.2560 integrates an 100 MHz ARM Cortex-M3 with a CAN transceiver and a UART connection to the Arduino 2560's serial ports (TX1/RX1, TX2/RX2, or TX3/RX3 selectable per jumper). The processor, acting as a CAN or SAE J1939 gateway, receives and processes all CAN data frames, including filtering of CAN message IDs, thus reducing the processing burden on the Arduino 2560. The processed data includes the message ID, data, plus a time stamp in micro-second resolution. The UART connection operates at 1M baud, matching the maximum CAN speed.
