I have not seen any examples yet of the threats sent to Joss Whedon over AoU, nor have I seen any actual reasons--people mad about Bruce and Nat? Or Clint’s family?-- for any such threats. BUT I’M HERE TO DEFEND A GODDAMNED GOOD DIRECTOR AND WRITER, SO LISTEN UP.
I was a Whedon fan long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe came into my life. Buffy was a daily installment for years, Firefly is still a point of contention in my family, and don’t get me started on the tears I shed over Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. But, for the sake of this argument, we can ignore this. This could count as bias I guess. I mean, not all of Stephen King’s books were great, not all of M. Night’s movies were awful. Everyone has good and bad days, so my personal bias in Joss’s direction can be put aside for now.
Think back, Marvel fans. What got you into this fandom? For me, it was Avengers. Mostly Tom Hiddleston to begin with, but the others as well. I watched the other movies because of the Avengers and how great it was. Joss Whedon did that, you guys.
Now, even if that wasn’t what got you into the MCU to begin with, you have to agree that it was a major staple in the series and it was great. You felt the tension when Tony and Steve argued over Howard, you laughed when Hulk smashed the shit out of Loki. It was a good movie done by a practiced, noted, and overall good writer.
This was his last Marvel movie. He’s been stressed as shit working on it, as we can all imagine, and he will not get another chance to write these characters. So of course he would want to encourage some of his own headcanons and take some creative license for this last hurrah. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t do the same; I know the shippers on this site, if given the chance, would make at least half the cast gay for each other. This man had the chance and he took it, and really did not ruin any of the characters to do it. Pietro’s fine, calm your tits.
Now, even if he did in your opinion ruin a character or their plotline... JOSS IS GONE. And Marvel has shown before that they will change whatever canon they feel like when they feel like. So whatever you’re mad about, whatever event happened in this movie that you disliked, it’s likely it will be overturned by the next movie. I reiterate: Pietro will probably walk this off. Shut up.
And finally, the last and most obvious point: YOU DON’T TELL SOMEONE TO KILL THEMSELVES OVER A MOVIE. He had stories he wanted told, and he told them. There is no need for threats and anger over something that is not actually morally wrong. If he was encouraging genocide or rape or child porn, yeah, get angry. But DEATH THREATS SHOULD NOT BE A THING.
