Redesign of Green Day’s 2004 album American Idiot.
The front design visually represents the album’s title, with the American flag and the dunce cap. The font used is American Typewriter, chosen because it looks fairly formal, as government documents would have been written using a typewriter before the computer became widely used. I included white stars and made the font white because the actual American glad has white stars on the blue bit. The dunce cap is a found image that has been altered (a line removed and then filled in grey) as I tried to create my own image but wasn’t happy with the result.
The back design is based on an American school report card. I found an image online and tried to recreate it (with adaptions) to make it look authentic. I used a basic serif font for most of the text because it is a formal document that is typed, however there are two cursive, ‘handwritten’ fonts for the names of the producers and mixer, which is supposed to look like handwritten signatures as a teacher would sign a report card. I copied the small print text from the original album as best I could, including the websites, logo of the record label, and the parental advisory warning. I also put on a barcode, and found a themed one in the shape of a cassette tape which I though would be fitting for a music CD album.
Overall I am very happy with my design. If I were to change one thing, it would be to spend more time to perfect the dunce cap image on the front cover, as I am still not 100% happy with it. I also had the idea to put ‘grades’ in the column next to the track lengths to make it look more like a report card. I would have used a handwritten font in a red colour to look like a teacher had written it (red pens are often used for marking work).
