T-shirt scrap quilt!!

Maybe you’ve seen me mention the t-shirt scrap quilt I’m working on, at some point over the past couple of years. I have saved many beloved t-shirts that were worn out or that we’d grown out of, or were from ancient eras that didn’t need to be remembered with clothing. Previously, I’ve turned t-shirts into yarn and made them into throw rugs. But some shirts aren’t well suited for that, or I want to preserve the images on them. So, why not a quilt?!

When I pulled the bag of unfinished project out, I was equally annoyed and pleased to learn I had little left to do. Blogged it at the blog!

A couple of years ago I had a heck of a sinus infection, and when I moved past the "can only nap and listen to the same two documentaries** over and over" I needed something to do with my hands. So, I pulled out my go-to soothing tool, one of those Clover spool knitters, some junk acrylic yarn I'd picked up in a craft pack and made a bunch of... tubes? I can't remember what they're called.

Then I got a little better and decided to assemble them into a creature. Mind you, I was still fevered.

Then, I finally got all the way better, stuck this thing in a drawer and forgot about it, except when it was difficult to open the yarn drawer. I kept *meaning* to unravel it but also kept putting it off. When I saw the fiber arts bingo square "Unravel/rip out/otherwise break down for parts an unsatisfactory project."

First I had to take apart this weird unfinished guy. Not too difficult, despite the super fuzziness of this yarn and a few stray head hairs crochet in that caused some snags in the frogging.

Now it was time for the "fun" part, undoing that spool knitting and then separating the two strands of yarn I'd done each one with. Boy things were tangled and twisted. A perfect balance of frustrating and fun to do while listening to an audiobook.

But it got done and I got everything wound. What I'm going to do with this acrylic I do not know but maybe it'll be pom-poms? (my other self-soothing Clover toy).

*which, I finished the quilting but it's gotta get washed, which means waiting for quarters.

I am trying real hard to turn my overwhelm of stash into objects–the next time we move I wanna be moving things and clothes not unused fabric or whatever. A lot of my stash is clothes that are no good for hand me down, but too good for rags, you know the kind. In that was a pair of sweatpants with a big unmendable rip in the butt and the elastic dusted out. “Those legs,” I thought, “could be mighty nice sleeves.” So!

Zombies and Zephyrs

I started playing more with embroidery as sketching, “drawing” the other commuters I saw regularly on the train. I wasn’t much for cross-stitch, but I did have the aida fabric from various friend’s destashes and a life of scrounging craft materials and it was fun to approach the pixel-like limitations of the fabric outside of cross stitch.
