No Motor(ized) Bikes: Tour De France Unveils New Plan To Catch Cheats : The Two-Way
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) today announces that its Disciplinary Commission has rendered its decision in the case of Belgian rider Femke Van den Driessche.
6 year ban, €20,000 fine + paying costs (yeah, not sure how they’ll get that cash from an unemployed teenager) and most interesting to me, they’ve stripped her results from the start of the 2015/6 cyclocross season, though she was caught at the end. With doping bans, they go from the date of the bad test, so that’s a new move, I think - will it set a precedent?
Overall I think it’s a reasonable penalty - the thing that’s missing, for me, is it ONLY penalises Van den Driessche, and lets everyone else off the hook. Knowing cyclocross, there’s pretty much no way a rider could do this kind of thing alone, and that’s before we get into the stories about her father, who’s also her pit crew, and her brother on an EPO ban... I always wish the UCI went after co-conspirators in all cheating cases, but especially those involving teenagers.
