That Final Rainbow Scene 🤔
The final scene in the Me! video is obviously very striking. It is clearly significant. The rainbow appears to have broke through the glass prism chrysalis, you can see the sky has shattered above.
There is colourful paint being produced/ "raining" on the scene. It appears that Brendan is producing the paint gloops falling from the air; he gestures up to the sky where rain gloop appears instantaneously.
Meanwhile, Taylor is bathing in this colourful paint. Yet, it's not actually raining on her. She is the source of the colourful paint puddle, which is continually growing larger as she dances throughout the scene.
Interestingly, both Taylor and Brendan are conjuring up this rainbow paint gloop. They are literally producing rainbows. They are gleeful, triumphant, magical. Dancing through the scene. It appears that not only is Taylor now living free and open in this new glass-shattered world, but Brendan is too. I think that is something worth noting.
Meanwhile, the rainbow paint is also spontaneously exploding in the sky. Their world is gradually becoming encompassed by this rainbow paint, everything is being washed by the colourful gloop. Brendan exits the shot, and brings back an umbrella for Taylor, just as the actual rainstorm breaks, and the world is consumed with an explosion of this rainbow paint.
They walk through the street exiting the shot, the umbrella preventing them from "getting wet" from the rain. Though at this point, Taylor has basically become one with the ocean of rainbow paint. As an aside, I saw some "het" fans saying that Brendan is Toe, and he's protecting her from the rain, a metaphor for him sheltering her from the storm that was her life a couple years ago. Hopeless.
That omnipresent rainbow 🌈 shattered the glass prism, opening up the sky, as we see in this final scene. But where did this rainbow rain paint come from ? Has the outside world been afflicted with rainbow storms this entire time, or is it that the glass prism shattering has triggered this rainbow storm? Considering that Taylor and Brendan are also conjuring this rain paint, I would think it's likely the latter.
During the Oz/Emerald City scene, there seems to be a rainbow at the center, or ground zero of "Emerald City". And Taylor and Brendan run toward it. Oz is just a representation of our greatest desires, right ?Their oz is a rainbow. They're running toward the colourful, freeing warmth of the rainbow. "Rainbows are frequently seen in the wake of a rainstorm. They come when the sunlight breaks through rain clouds." So while I think that the rainbow is a very clear nod to sexuality and coming out, it's also simply a nod to happier, freer days in the light of a previous storm. I'm sure for Taylor the "storm" means several things, her public mishaps as well as being closeted.
Taylor and Brendan run to Oz, which seems to be what triggers the shattering of the glass prism. As they run, the camera pans toward and up the rainbow. It almost appears to converge with the chrysalis glass prism containing their world, as if this may be the source of the prism chrysalis. And then you get a peak into the rainbow prism.
They are inside of the prism. THEY are the rainbow that shatters the prism. They dance through this Grease-esque number, which is fun and freeing. They are enjoying themselves in this colourful world.
Then Brendan gives Taylor one final dose of encouragement, and with a click of her heels (theres no place like home), they dance their way out of the prism. They are the rainbow, so this shatters the prism chrysalis. And then they are back in the streets, our final scene. They are throwing rainbows, painting their world with the influence of their colourful selves. They are finally free, finally home, finally living their true selves. She's back "home in Kansas", but this time it's in screaming colour.
This interpretation has been largely shaped by my beliefs as a part of this fandom. Some are seeing this video and having an ah-ha moment, while some are still slow to catch on. But that's the genius of what Taylor has done here. It seems so obvious, yet her message can be interpreted in a different way. It's clear to everyone that Taylor is ready to really live as herself. But what isn't clear to everyone is what exactly that entails. But they will get there.
I am so excited to see what @taylorswift does this era. She's such a genius, everything means something, and nothing has just one meaning. I feel so lucky to be on this side of the fandom, viewing this transition through this lens. I can't wait to see what is coming. 🌈🦋💞
