Headcanon: Endermen are adolescent enderdragons. Shulkers are baby enderdragons. There are so many of them because they take hundreds of years to mature and many die before reaching full maturity. Older endermen can be seen developing spinal scales and short tails from the base of their spines, paired with stubby snouts and blunt claws. Despite their increased strength, they show no behavioral differences until the development of their wings, when they start building a nest and become more territorial.
