Elusive Memories
A small hand rose, brushing aside unruly brown bangs. A huff left the small kit as yellow-green eyes cast about the small Limsan apartment inquisitively. “Momma?”
A few unsteady steps are taken, ears twisting and pivoting about, seeking any sign. His hand lowered slowly, a stuttering, stifled sob that was only half-choked back emerging from him as he rubbed at a scrape on his leg. It was hardly anything, an assortment of small scratches and a few drops of blood, but still a tear came down from his eyes. Another plaintive cry, voice wavering, “Momma?”
Suddenly both ears swiveled toward the bedroom, his head soon following, eyes locking on the approaching woman. Her features were shrouded, as if backlit by an intense light. He couldn’t remember...couldn’t picture her face as she knelt. He couldn’t place the color of her hair as her arms wrapped around him. Her eyes were all he could see in that gray, green to match his own, as she whispered into one of those long ears. “My poor Maze, what happened to you my love?”
He felt the kiss against his cheek from that faceless silhouette. The brush of her fingers through his unruly hair, and her own tail wrapping about his small frame. “Momma.” was all he could say, nestling into that comforting, featureless warmth.
