itâs just not me to wear it on my sleeve / mayuhimu / ao3
It's not like Mayuzumi had expected basketball to just disappear from his life once he started university. He just hadn't expected anyone else to reappear with it.
Itâs simple, he tells himself. Basketball. He just wants to stay in shape. Playing sports is a luxury he wonât have anymore once heâs set loose into the real world of long office hours and shitty pay. But when he looks up from the sidelines at the figure breaking out from the pile of bodies guarding him, the perfect curve of a three-pointer cleaving through the air, the coachâs whistle signaling the end of the game as it lands neatly inside the hoop, well.
Itâs not that simple.

âYou know,â Mayuzumi says flatly, leaning away as much as he possibly can, âIâd rather we have this talk without there being a blade on my throat.â
Himuro smiles, but it does not quite reach his eyes just yet. Itâs getting to the point that this, Mayuzumi thinks in exasperation, is becoming an annoyingly familiar situation. âGive me a good reason to do that.â
Mayuzumi sighs. âWell, first of all, Iâm not gonna die even if you decapitate me, because fucking Akashi still has my heart.â
âGo on.â
âDo you really like playing this game so much.â
âMm.â The tip of his sword digs deeper into Mayuzumiâs skin. âIâm waiting.â
âSecond of all, Iâm really sorry I tried to kidnap your kid, okay? That was like, three visits ago. Maybe four.â
âMuro-chin isnât my dad,â said kid calls from behind a rock, staring at him suspiciously. âAnd he should just eat you already. Youâre weird.â
âYou know I donât want to get a stomachache, Atsushi.â
âRude,â Mayuzumi mutters as he finally feels the pressure on his neck disappear. Itâs infuriating how Himuro isnât that much taller than him but still looks so much more imposing, even with him swishing around that fluffy thing on his shoulder. He wonders idly if itâs a tail (and if he could discreetly touch it without immediately getting shredded) as he steps away carefully from where he had been. âOkay, so hereâs the deal - â
âYouâre here on Akashiâs behalf to offer me another, vastly convoluted way to defeat my dear brother.â
At this, Mayuzumi rolls his eyes. âWow, I donât even have to sell it to you anymore, do I? But yeah, the usual.â
âSo this is just perfunctory.â
âRight.â Another day, another bullshit assignment. Itâs no great secret now that Mayuzumi would vastly prefer telling Akashi to piss off than do to his bidding, but that he would also rather do that while staying in one piece, thank you very much. While Himuro is only marginally less annoying than Kagami and his ragtag group, at least he isnât yet directly in Akashiâs line of fire. Yet. Mayuzumi shrugs, motioning to go. âWell, thatâs all then - â
Himuro grabs his wrist, startling him so much he almost falls backwards.
âI didnât tell you to leave,â he says, and this time Mayuzumi thinks he isnât hallucinating the mild interest in his voice. âTell me more.â
Behind them, he can hear a childish grumble to the tune of ugh, finally.
2.
âMuro-chin, didnât we just pass through here?â
âI forgot something,â Himuro says, without looking back. Over the months Atsushi has become accustomed to running after him (sometimes reluctantly, dragging his feet) over all manners of terrain that he doesnât really worry anymore about the kid getting lost or eaten by bears or whatever. In any case, Atsushi is bigger than most children of his age, and less prone to doing stupid things like helping lost pilgrims and fighting off swarms of bees for random villagers.
âIs there something in the water?â Atsushi asks as they stop near the stream. The something in question is beyond the bend, and Himuro sees it soon enough: a figure lying prone in the middle, clinging to a rock as the water rushed over him. âWhat - â
âAtsushi, can you bring me some firewood?â
âEh?â
-
Atsushi sits next to him, roasting a string of ayu on a stick. A few feet away, beyond the fire theyâd just made, is Mayuzumi propped up against a rock, unconscious as the gaping wound on his chest heals bit by bit.Â
Asleep, there is something almost serene in his expression, something that Himuro has never seen before. Usually he just looks bored, or annoyed, or some combination of both with a healthy side of contempt. Maybe having to be around Akashi all the time would do that. Atsushi passes him half of the fish, and they eat in silence.
âNngh.â
Atsushi scuttles closer to him as Mayuzumi groans and starts to wake, his eyes fluttering open in disorientation. The child pouts and clings on to Himuroâs sleeve. âHeâs still weird.â
âYouâre not that great either,â Mayuzumi shoots back. Then he looks down at his chest, and then back up at Himuro. â...Please donât tell me.â
âYou kind of fell out of the sky,â Himuro tells him noncommittally. The sun hangs low on the horizon, burning the clouds orange and gold. Atsushi sneezes, loudly. Maybe itâs best to stop here for the night. âYouâre free to go, if you want.â
âWasnât planning on being stuck here with you anyway,â Mayuzumi grumbles, sitting up straight. Himuro finds himself eyeing the other youkaiâs fingers as he pulls at what remains of his collar; though Mayuzumi isnât in any terrible state of undress, whatever attack heâd taken had left him topless for the most part. Mayuzumi, catching his gaze, narrows his eyes. â...What are you doing.â
He doesnât bother looking away. âSitting here, mostly.â
âArenât you going to thank Muro-chin for saving you?â Atsushi pipes up at this moment; Himuroâs almost forgotten the kid is still there, huddled up against him. âYou know. Because he did.â
The wind picks up around them, gently at first, then howling and furious. Frowning, Himuro moves to shield them both from the leaves and other flying debris.
âI donât owe anyone anything.â
When the wind dies down, Mayuzumi is no longer there.
âWhere did he go?â
âI donât know,â Himuro says. He looks up at the dying light, and notices a single feather, long and silver, land softly at his feet. That he picks up, turning over in his fingers, then slides into his sleeve.
(3.Â
âIs this what you imagined it to be?â Himuro asks. They are sitting on a hill somewhere far from home, far from anything they know. âFreedom, I mean.â
âNot really,â Mayuzumi replies. He coughs. âWell, maybe a little.â
Mayuzumi leans heavily on his shoulder, his hair gently tickling Himuroâs cheek. Around them, there are flowers, although what kind they are Himuro has no idea. In all his journeys heâs never had much time to look at the flowers.
Now heâs too late.
Himuro takes his hand; there is blood on it, too much blood, and the scent of it all makes him lightheaded. This time is different, because he can hear the beating, however slowly, of a heart. âIn what way?â
âEverythingâs a little clearer,â Mayuzumi says, his voice a little raspier than before, a little quieter. Himuro watches the black bruises spread slowly, crawling up his shoulder, down his sides, a virus even Tenseiga cannot cure. Mayuzumi reaches up and touches his chest. âLike the fact that weâll all die, anyway. Someday.â
âSomeday,â Himuro agrees. Not now, he wants to say, but it would be a lie. He closes his own hand around Mayuzumiâs, listening to the wind in his ear. Thump, thump. âAtsushi will miss you.â
âLittle brat wonât remember much.â
âTrust me, he will.â
I will.
Then something hits his nose, then his chin: petals, small and white, the entire hillside dancing with springtime. It is almost enough to hide the scent of decay and blood--almost.
âYou donât have to overexert yourself,â he tells Mayuzumi. âItâs fine.â
âWasnât gonna,â Mayuzumi tells him, his voice barely above a whisper. âYou were saying stupid things.â
âAre you happy, then?â
âMm.â He reaches up, touching Himuroâs face, brushing aside his fringe. âClose your eyes.â
Himuro does so.
The wind, sweet and floral, brushes past his face, maybe once, maybe twice. When he opens his eyes again there is nothing left: a soft impression in the velvety ground, a flower on his lips.)
"I can't sleep without you here" w/ HanaHimu, "I'm never going to leave you" w/ MidoAka, and "You're not gonna cry, are you?" w/ any Himuro ship of your choice o3o
Nice! ovo Cut bc a lot Also for the Himu ship I decided to just do a randomizer so. Random crack pair happened
HanaHimu:
âI canât sleep without you here...â Tatsuya mumbled as he clung to Makoto. âPlease donât leave...â
Makoto froze, unable to bring himself to leave. The way Tatsuya clung to him, whined out his request... He couldnât say no.
That didnât mean he could just say yes, though. Relationships werenât his forte in the least. It would be easier for him to treat this like he did his friends. Laugh it off and leave.
So why couldnât he bring himself to leave the other boy? Why did he want to stay and wrap his arms around Tatsuya?
He sighed after a while of thinking. âFine, fine... Iâll stay right here...â He turned the best he could and laid back down. âGet some sleep.â
âYou promise you wonât leave...?â Tatsuyaâs eyes were wide, full of fear.
âI promise...I wonât leave until you tell me to.â Makoto kissed his forehead.Â
âThank you...â Tatsuya held the other tight. âIâm sorry...â
âNo need to apologize.â Makoto sighed. Sure, most people would make this annoying, but something about Tatsuya...made it hard.
âAre you sure...?â Tatsuya sniffled and peeked up at Makoto again.
âIâm sure.â Makoto replied with a sigh. âNow you seriously need to shut up and get some sleep.â
MidoAka:
Seijuurou wished he could keep himself from crying. He wished he wasnât so scared Shintarou was going to walk out at any minute. He was, though, he was terrified.
Heâd made a mistake, cried. His father had always told him that was weakness, why didnât he listen? Now he was going to lose the one thing he had.
âPlease donât leave me...â He choked out, grabbing at Shintarouâs sleeves and the otherâs eyes widened.
âWhy would I leave you?â He asked, his voice soft. âI wasnât even thinking about it.â
âI made a mistake...â Seijuurouâs voice was quiet. âPlease, please donât leave.â
Shintarou knelt and wiped the tears from the redheadâs eyes. âI promise Iâm never going to leave you.â
Seijuurou wrapped his arms around the green-haired boy and shook with tears. âThank you...â
MayuHimu(Thank the generator, okay):
âYouâre not gonna cry, are you?â Chihiro asked, obviously displeased by the otherâs sniffling. âWhat did I say to make you cry?â
âHow can you handle so many prodigies at once?â Tatsuya asked, the tears still threatening to spill.
Chihiro realized then it wasnât happy or sad tears about to fall, but angry tears. His lack of issue with the prodigies on his team was making this guy angry? Odd thing to get worked up about...
âSomeone needs to learn to calm down.â
âCalm down? How can I be calm?â Tatsuya hissed, eyes narrowing. âAround someone like you--â
âIâll teach you how to at least act calm.â Chihiro replied, cutting the other off. âGet ready, this wonât be easy.â
domestic mayuhimu ficlet. himuro does not know what kusaya is
stuck it in a drabble dump on ao3 too
contains a bit of gross kissing
âWhat the hell is that thing on the table?â
Chihiro doesnât bother to move, eyes trained on his newest acquisition from the bookstore. Itâs not like he can understand spoken English all that well yet, especially in his boyfriendâs rapid delivery. But he hears what and table and thatâs enough for him to know. âDinner.â
âAnd here I was, thinking that youâd hid a dead body somewhere.â
This time he does look up, peering over the book in a deader expression than normal at the man throwing his keys on the table. Maybe heâs imagining it, but Tatsuya looks like heâs about to chuck the plate at his face. "Very funny. Youâve never had kusaya before?â
âNo.â A pause, then a sigh. âI wish youâd have let me cook today.â
âWhoa, I thought we were supposed to split the chores.â Chihiro sits up from the couch, stretching, and reluctantly puts his novel down. The living room is tiny and still cluttered with unopened boxes, and he crosses it in a couple steps to the equally tiny kitchen. âYou always make a mess when you cook.â
âThen youâd clean it up, wonât you? Splitting the chores.â Tatsuya flashes him one of his brilliant smiles, and he stops. Sometimes he wonders how the hell this relationship even started, and this is one of those times when heâs looking at this smile too beautiful to call his own. Like some scene from when a mediocre light novel protagonist has an epiphany about his relationship with a stunning girl and muses on the surreality of it all. He thinks back to that year he went abroad to America for a summer and--
He frowns. Thereâs definitely a hand sneaking towards the plate with malicious intent. Chihiro darts in at the last moment and snatches his kusaya away from harm, staring accusingly as he does so. âThatâs so unfair.â
âDidnât know you started stealing my lines either.â
âYouâre hotter when you shut up.â Then Chihiro leanes in to actually shut him up, mouth-first. He tries to slide the plate back to the far side of the table, but finds that it actually takes a really good sense of balance to do anything while making out next to the sharp corners of their new dining table. Fuck it, he thinks, and starts really going for it.
(It doesnât really help that Tatsuya already has a hand in his hair and grabs away at his scalp, and Chihiro feels hot despite the air conditioning on full blast and theyâre barely a minute into doing this and he feels another arm snake around his waist and into his jeans and his mind just stops.)
There is a crash.
Chihiro breaks away first, annoyed at how even in this disheveled state Tatsuya still looks impressively put-together with that fucking smirk on his face, though the unmistakable redness is a victory on Chihiroâs part. He warily sidesteps a piece of porcelain. âFuck.â
âOops.â
âYou did that on purpose.â
âHey, Iâm not kissing you if you eat that--that...is that even a Japanese thing?â
Chihiro fixes Tatsuya a glare and they end up cleaning the floor together. Dinner is beef-flavored instant ramen, and Chihiro spends the rest of the night furiously lecturing Kagami over text on his brotherâs terrible, Americanized dietary problems.
please imagine himuro being completely fascinated with mayuzumi and wanting to get to know him better
please imagine mayuzumi being pretty uncomfortable and embarrassed that someone actually wants to spend a lot of time around him (thatâs such a foreign concept for him??)
please imagine himuro kissing him softly for the first time and afterwards mayuzumi hides his face in his hands all cute and blushy
please imagine himuro introducing his boyfriend to murasakibara and that tall purple shit is just like âlmao where i donât see anyone.â (bonus: himuro punches him in the face while mayuzumi watches entertained from the sidelines.)
