đĽ Unpopular opinion đĽ
I used to be very judgemental about video games that advertised themselves as multiple choice games where your decisions mattered, only to turn around and just give you the illusion of choice (examples: Life Is Strange and the majority of Telltale Gamesâ lineup).Â
But after a while- and this is where the unpopular opinion comes in- I realized multiple choice games cost more money than you think, need more time than you think, and take more effort than you think. Even companies like Telltale Games, who specialize in games that revolve around playersâ decisions, are limited in what they can do. Even AAA companies like Bioware are limited with what they can do despite their large budgets.Â
The one company that produces games where your choices matter while bringing the illusion of choice to a minimum is Choice Of Games (x x x) but even then thereâs a reason for that. The games from COG are all text based, so unless they decide to add pictures, majority of the effort and budget goes into the writing. They donât need to worry about alot of the things that other video game companies have to, so itâs much easier for them to make branching choices that branch into other choices and so on and so on. But even COG can fall into the âillusion of choiceâ trap despite their added freedom.
So even though their limitations does not excuse a lack of quality or weak choices, I understand why as players we are not given every choice to explore or why many branching paths lead to a forgone conclusion. And though I want companies to improve upon their choices and branching pathways, I understand that they have limitations and donât judge them harshly for them anymore.
đĽ On a related note (slightly less unpopular but still an unpopular opinion) I believe Telltale Games has improved upon the way they go about making your choices matter. They still need to improve in areas, but I donât think theyâve been stagnant when it comes to their writing.
đĽÂ Also I have THOUGHTS about the ending of Life Is Strange but this post is long enough.
