Day 5: Miracle

Voltuk skipped across the bridge over the Valley of Heroes and made his way into Stormwind. No sooner had the imp crossed under the main gates than a guard started running towards him. 

“Stop! You! Stop now!”

Voltuk ignored him and continued skipping into the trade district, bouncing around all the people walking among the stores.

“You! Imp! Stop right there!”

Voltuk turned towards the auction house, but suddenly a hand grabbed his thin arm and yanked him backwards.

“I told you to stop, imp!”

Voltuk looked up at the guard and put on as innocent a face as could be worn by an imp. “I’m sorry. Did you need something?”

“I told you to stop!”

“I didn’t hear you. I’m deaf.”

“Then how are you hearing me now?”

Voltuk looked down and then looked back to the guard. “It’s a miracle! I can hear again!”

“You’re leaving right now!”

“But I was going to get me a Goblin Blaster 2! I heard they were on sale!”

“No! You’re leaving now!”

“But why is that fountain on fire?”

“Fountain on..  what?”

The guard turned to look at the fountain in front of the auction house. No sooner was he looking than a fireball shot past him and splashed against water. Steam hissed up and water splashed out of the fountain, hitting the guard in the face. The guard dropped a step back and, unfortunately, dropped the imp. As soon as he looked back down, he saw the imp starting to fade away.

“Sucker.”

May 25 - Day 5 Miracle / Tension

Fiorenze lifted her cat up by the little furry armpits, letting her sleek, long and slightly iridescent body streeetch out for a moment before she brought the creature in for a big cuddle and smooch on her little, magical head. Rue trilled and butted her head against Fio’s jawline, extremely content with the general procedure. 

It was rare for Blink Kittens to survive into fully grown Blink Cats, but here she still was four years later, imbued with the arcane runoff that was terribly prevalent down in the Dalaran sewers — and all the strange abilities that came with that. Firenze sighed and waltzed slowly around her bedroom, the cat still cradled in her arms, “I’m going to leave you again soon, you know, so you’ll be in charge of the place.” 

Rue purred and let out a content “Mew!” 

“There’s something I have to do, you know. For me. I’ve enjoyed fighting things and working with mercenaries more than a Lady probably should. Not that I’m really a Lady anymore, anyway. I suppose that frees me up from needing to worry about my image quite a bit, doesn’t it?” she mused, twirling slowly on the ball of her foot and causing her long, draped vest to fluff out a bit with the movement. 

“Mrah~” 

Fio hummed and scritched Rue behind a black, pointed ear, “It won’t be easy, you know. I doubt Xylaes will be too happy to see me, but he was the one who told me to take care of myself and focus on the good things I have, and working on contracts is and was technically in those categories. It will be fine, there’s no tension quite like Court tension and I was always a pro at navigating that.” 

There was a crackle of gathering magic and the odd, ozone like smell that permeated the air in the presence of the arcane, and in a soft purple flash Rue blinked from her arms onto the chaise, immediately rolling onto her back with her front paws up — thoroughly done being held captive, “Mrrr.” 

How could she leave her darling girl? She laughed and took a quick picture of the kitty with her comm before dropping it back into her pocket, “And there’s the gallery party tomorrow, too, which will have me out terribly late. I’ll remind Keranna to put your favorite fish flakes on top of your dinner.” 

Rue trilled again, kneading the air. So spoiled. 

Fiorenze cooed at her adorable little miracle creature, “Alright, alright. I’ll find your string. We’ll play plenty between now and then to make up for it.” 

It was the least she could do.

She had watched the celebrations to Torcali with awe and an open heart. The Loa of Wanderers was certainly one Khaeris could get behind. Ahuatli had specifically chosen this festival and it made Khaeris smile to think her friend knew her so well.

Khaeris had drunk enough kungaloosh to feel the warmth throughout her body, and eaten enough pastries and feast food to last her a week. And danced for hours. Things were quiet now. Conversations murmured around her, mostly in Zandali, which she didn’t speak. She felt like a child among elders, cocooned by warmth and musical words she didn’t understand.

Zandalar was casting quite a spell on her. Mesmerizing.

Ahuatli was still dancing, another veil dancer stepping with her. Their eyes crinkled with smiles and their whole being was grace incarnate. They knew just how to step together and lift their praises to their loas. Khaeris would never get tired of watching.

Miracles in the motion. Prayers in their rhythm. And epiphany in the rumbled notes of a drum.

She came to the beach three days after his last spotting.

The gin bottle had fallen numbly from his hand to land with a soft thump in the sand as he stared at the woman slowly climbing out of the ocean looking like everything and nothing he'd imagined.  The green hair he'd caught sight of so many times sat full and loose about her dark skinned face while the same striking sea-foam eyes bore into him.  She was beautiful.  

She also had a tail.

Where legs should have been, there was a thick moving green tail to match the mess of hair that shone so brightly in the coming starlight that filled the beach.  The scales shimmered and shifted easily as the shark or dolphin he had thought was hunting him before when he had first spotted her.  Coiling under her as the waters lapped about her lower half, bits of foam locking Albert's eyes to completely in a rapture of the miracle that come to him.

Albert's legs matched the bottle as he lowered down to his knees to find himself on her level now.  Her eyes were sobered him from his previous drink but intoxicating him the longer they stared at one another.  He had to say something.

"Hi."

The woman looked at him curiously, her head tilting as the word swam to her ears only to slow and drown before it made sense to her.  She spoke nothing as they sat with the awkward tension of two strangers never having meant to meet.

Albert coughed and tried to clear his throat again, speaking slower thinking that somehow it would be clearer to her.  A hand was raised to match.  "Hell-oh."

Still she stared at him.

The wind said more than the two of them with the waves rolling in with their backup chorus.

Albert lowered his hand and started to slide forward.  "Can you-"

The shriek that ripped through his head caused Albert to scream just as loud and horrifyingly.  Hands flying to his ears as he howled in agony before flopping into the sand to writhe and shake in unimaginable pain.  What seemed to last forever eventually subsided as his hands shakily fell away from his ears, the tears and sobs of his chest the only sound now on the beach.  As Albert rolled over to his stomach, his aching eyes looked to the spot of his visitor again and found no one.

"Wha the hell?"
