Cleo Passley, alumni from Media Trust gave us the background of her journey into the media. This journey was undoubtedly not a clear cut one, but one with ups and downs. Whilst at university, Cleo did not enjoy it and decided to drop out and pursue a more creative route, much to the disappointment of her parents. They said to her that she had one year to get a job, or she would be going back to university. Consequently, she worked at a pub for a while, disliked it and therefore did something about it. Cleo really had guts and proved to her parents just how determined she was to make her mark. Cleo reminisced on her time at Media Trust and told us that it literally changed her life. Media Trust taught her to not be afraid to try new things and she advised us that this is crucial and can really help give you some form of clarity.

What really resonated with me is when she said, “Don’t feel like you should know what you want to do”. To some extent, I know which avenue I want to go down, however sometimes I get conflicted, worry and doubt myself. However, Cleo did restore my confidence as she didn’t know precisely what she would do and now she is a junior casting researcher at Bear Grylls. Although it was not an easy ride and as Cleo said, “creative industries never really go smoothly”. Before this role, she was a logger which I did not have much awareness of. This involved long hours and she admitted it was not them most riveting role. Nevertheless, she enjoyed it as she got to learn about other roles from being surrounded by executives and learning the media jargon. Cleo is very ambitious and strives to have her own production company.

Some quotes that I took away:

“Make sure you find time, be happy and content”

“Creativeness never goes” – essentially, she said seize all opportunities now whilst we can, in the prime of our lives.

“Your journey is different to everyone else’s”

“Encourage each other” – I am all for supporting each other on this process that we are sharing together and growing together in our future careers.

“Create a mood board. Look at it every day and it will happen”. She emphasised the importance of time management and visioning your goal.

Going back to the title of this feature, “Once you find your path, you’ll fly.” – very fine words indeed!

Roles in TV and Compliance – with Jasmine Dotiwala

Our session was then followed with a masterclass from Jasmine, where I learned about the numerous roles within TV and compliance.

Jasmine really deconstructed all the roles that make up a television programme and eradicated the stereotypes in which generalise these roles to a mere few and therefore disregards other crucial roles. I really enjoyed learning more about the UK company Ofcom who govern content and ensure that illegal content is removed. When getting into the media it is vital to know about these laws and regulations or it could have devastating consequences. I also learnt more about pitching, the art of networking and commissioning.

What did you learn today at Oath?

Today we went to Oath for the day, the company that serves as the umbrella company for different digital content subdivisions like Yahoo!, RYOT, Xbox and more. In this short video, I ask my colleagues what they learnt from the very insightful and useful day.

Know the saying ‘You've got more money than sense?’ Yeahhh well you've got to be stupid rich to purchase these items..

1. Gold toilet paper...who says your arse doesn't deserve the finer things in life eh?! This luxurious gold toilet paper is fit for a King or Queen...or Kanye West lol. Grab yourself some queen, its only $1.2 million.

2.Gold pills that turn your shit gold too! For $425 you've literally got to be shitting me (see what I did there) 

3. Theodent 300 is a Luxury toothpaste that uses an extract of chocolate instead of fluoride to strengthen teeth enamel . It retails at $100 a tub. Personally I'd be fine with a bit of Colgate but whatever floats your boat innit. Do you boooo!

Right lets switch it up because quite frankly I'm tired of seeing all this gold!

4. If you're having a bad day then don't look because this Joe Malone candle worth $470 is due to make you want to punch something. What makes it different to a regular non branded land of IKEA candle??? Absolutely nothing.. well, apart from the fact that is called ‘ Joe Malone’ 

5. Ladies and gents I introduce to you the Densuke, in other words ‘The Black watermelon.’ A very rare watermelon  grown only on the northern island of Hokkaido, Japan. Think its interesting? Spice up your life!

Maya Egbo is a young Actor and Presenter from East London.

After getting her first acting commercial job with Nickelodeon at just 7 years old, Maya is more than used to taking creative direction on set. Maya went on to further work with companies such as Fairy liquid and Valspar paint. She was also one of the first voices for Facebooks first TV and online ad after doing voiceover work with them.

Maya is multi-skilled and is currently completing a Media course with MediaTrust to further work on her craft and expand her skillsets in different areas within the media industry, as she is also interested in blogging, vlogging and curating content for social media.

As she is most passionate about talking to people and telling stories through video mediums, In the future she aspires to host TV shows and award ceremonies within the music and entertainment industry. Maya has always been expressive and confident in front of the camera and she has never shied away from using her voice to discuss different topics and ask questions.

Maya’s love for the Arts and Media industry blossomed when she attended The BRIT School of performing arts and technology where she studied Musical Theatre. Being in such a creative environment allowed her to think creatively, where she became a more inquisitive and open minded explorer.

After graduating and whilst in the early stages of her gap year, Maya got accredited in a Radio production course that she took alongside Capital Xtra where she found her presenter niche and also learnt about the technical side of radio and production. Her new found love for presenting and eagerness was apparent and this aided her next job- presenting and conducting the backstage interviews for Capital Xtras ‘Unleashed’ concert at Koko in Camden.

In September 2018, Maya was flown out to Croatia with BushBash records to present their backstage vlog at one of Europe’s biggest festivals- Outlook festival. Whilst coming up with creative content for the vlog, she interviewed the likes of Jaykae, Killer P and Irah.
