So uh… lagged once while writing this so let’s see if I can make it this time. Supposed to be Ace today but I don’t like him that much (I actually don’t really mind anymore but at the start I wanted to shank him) and I just read a really good Cater focused fic so… CATER DIAMOND EVERYBODY!!

(Nami you may have to help me fill in some gaps here or my misremember-ments, heh… sorry?)

I’ve not read a lot [if any] of Caters vignettes (kind of like side stories) and he’s mostly prominently featured in Book 1 with some other bits… sprinkled throughout, so we don’t spoil anything. I’m pretty sure he’s somewhat based on the King of Hearts (honestly I’m not certain but I’m like 80% sure) & obviously a diamond card, as I’m sure you’ve noticed is a trend with our card solider boys!

When you first meet him he is very much social media third year, pretty chill and explaining how the dorms work a little bit to us. He honestly doesn’t get too involved if I remember correctly, as he mostly just guides us for a little bit and manipulates us into painting the roses (a sort of duty for the dorm) & then making us go make a tart with Treys help to appease Riddle/the housewarden.

But just like Trey, he has designed it to be this way. He has designed himself to fit into an ideal but somewhat forgettable mold, if a pleasant one. This is basically a trauma response — well not quite trauma, but definitely close to it — as his family constantly moved due to his fathers(? It was one of the parents…) work. And by constantly, I mean so constantly he started allowing himself to never get attached, forcing himself to not make meaningful connections because they’d all be gone before he knew it and that was too much pain to handle. He also is basically the only guy in the house with a bunch of sisters, so uh… I have to imagine also not that fun.

One tidbit about him that I think shows his character well is he has never been collared by Riddle — OH CRAP I NEED TO EXPLAIN THAT, THAT SOUNDS REALLY WEIRD, UHM — simplified, collaring is a form of punishment that Riddle has as his UM, alright? He has such control and dedication that he has never broken a rule badly enough or has always wiggled his way out of it likely with just charisma to have never been badly punished by what some people called “The Red Tyrant.” I don’t know if this is a good thing, because it means he is still more likely & easily able to push people away instead of actually letting them know him but uh… I’m not a therapist, I can’t deal with that!

Oh and he constantly speaks in text lingo and hashtags. Not like he can’t hold a normal conversation but it just constantly slips out of him. Yeah, he’s very much a social media guy.

So yeah, Cater is a pretty cool character that I just don’t think gets the focus in the main story enough to really shine which is… probably his goal, frankly. I think you can see why this dorm is pretty well liked across the board, though most characters in this game are. Thank you for allowing me to rant about a game you know nothing about and putting up with it! :)
