Getting into the guts of a laptop is both satisfying and terrifying
I had an old acer laptop from like 2013/14ish and after Justin McElroy convinced me to replace windows with Linux, it was like a whole new machine.
It has a whole terabyte of storage and I just wiped it completely clean, so I’ve decided to make it my photo storage for now. And with that in mind: I decided to replace the battery! Only like $20 and it would keep this bad boy running nicely for many more years.
However!! There are no clear guides for this process for this specific model and related stuff had completely different battery setups.
Sooo, after much searching and comparing and whatnot, I did finally pry open the case (Struggle™) and it turns out. It does not open from the Bottom. This is one where the top keyboard area lifts off of the base. Which meant sticking my fingers between this slightly hinged opened laptop and disconnecting ribbon cables and thinking I’m probably breaking things.
After much struggle, I finally got it off. And then I got to spend a good long while trying to figure out how to actually get the battery out. Turns out there’s a slide thing that’s only labeled on the underside of the case, which is annoying because I currently have the guts open in front of me and I can’t exactly just flip it over, so I didn’t notice it.
And then finally FINALLY. I SWITCHED THE BATTERIES. I reconnected the ribbons. I fucked up a couple screws on the casing but we’re FINE.
AND IT WORKED!!!!!! I am sweating and shaking and feeling a little ill but it was a fully successful operation. Baby girl is peacefully charging and recovering from her surgery and she’s gonna be just fine.
Anyhow. I’ve messed with the innards of my gaming pc before but this was my first laptop and it was So Much Worse. I’m doing my actual current laptop soon too and I did find a specific guide for it and it looks to be Extremely Easy compared to this and I am Relieved.
:3 but yeah. I love this. I am loving getting around planned obsolescence. My current laptop’s main issue was the battery really starting to die, and for some reason I had never considered replacing it until the J-man sat me down and told me to not just take this bullshit on the chin.
So thank you, Justin McElroy. Never thought I’d get to experience you as My Dad Too, but here we are. I think he’d probably be proud.
LMAOOO they think I was born yesterday
there really is a tumblr page for every character bc I just found a fan of a villain from the aladdin tv show that I never knew existed until today

i need to write a musical
I hope I feel fully better by tomorrow so Myles and I can go frolicking in the garden
If you’re like me and you’ve kinda puttered around with the idea of trying Linux but even knowing where to start seemed intimidating - this finally got me to do it literally today! Short, straightforward, and delivered in a rather charming, dadly fashion.
