the evening before her birthday.
He had left during the day, without much of a warning except a small, hushed chat with the secretary he shared with Ciarán. It was unusual for him to leave like this, so suddenly and especially when everyone was used to the fact that he was always one of the last ones to leave the firm. However, today was different, and he had some plans he needed to sort out.
He had been planning this for weeks, the days on the calendar getting closer and closer to her birthday and he simply needed everything to be perfect. He had missed five of her birthdays exactly, but he had always celebrated it in his own way, never capable of letting that day slip by unnoticed. Even when they weren’t close, he would either buy some of her favorite flowers to leave around his apartment until they eventually wilted, or he would buy a slice of cake or even maybe just listen to a record of what used to be their song.
But this year would be different, he wanted to see her smile and he wanted to make her happy. Things were far from being alright, but maybe just for this weekend, they could manage not to think about those other things.
According to his plans, Chuck picked her up from the firm at the same time he always did, nothing out of the ordinary, except that only today as soon as they were both inside of the car, he turned around and gave her a closed envelope. On the exterior, in a calligraphy that should be familiar to her, it only read: TO SOO-YUN MAXINE BRANDT.
On the interior a small letter. And a small note with details about the kind attire that should be taken for the weekend.
The details of the location were only know to him and Chuck, he had wanted to surprise her and after much convincing, Chuck decided to give in and help Matthias with his plan. If she chose to accept it, Chuck would be able to take her home so she could sort everything out and drive her to the appointed place, just in time for dinner.
