The shot pierced through the silence of the night and she sworethat she could hear his body drop to the ground. His skull hitting thepavement with such force that it should have knocked him out. Her breath caught in her throat, her heartbeat picked up as she realizedthat she was scared that he might be seriously hurt.
Her whole body ached at that point. There were cuts and bruisesall over her teammates bodies, yet the invasion continued and notone of them dared stopped. One second could mean a life lost, andno superhero would stand for that. In reality, they were outnumbered. Heavily outnumbered and even if they were keeping things undercontrol, their bodies were human (for the most part); they got injured, they bled and they needed rest.
When the situation finally seemed to be contained, more chaosbroke loose. Apparently others decided to take advantage of the disaster and wreck even more havoc in the city. Civilians startedfighting one another in an attempt to escape unscathed. Soon, they weren’t just fending aliens but their own people.
The team continued dividing forces. Half of them would deal withcivilians, while the other half would finish with the otherworldly threat.Captain Marvel’s fists seemed even brighter every time that she blasted one sucker before moving onto the next. This went on for a while, until it seemed that almost every alien was unconscious andon the ground. Her blue orbs searched the scene hoping to find the arachnid in the midst of the receding chaos. She wasn’t successful.
Carol took to the air in order to get a better vantage point. Slowly, she was able to find most of the Avengers, all of them seemed to be just fine. Patching up and little rest would do wonders for everybody. Still, there was no sign of Parker anywhere. Her heart sank, she hada terrible feeling about this whole thing, specially since he liked toprotect people at all costs. She flew past the streets of New York, her head turning to the left and to the right as she continuedsearching in vain.
That’s when she found him. His palms outstretched as he tried toappease a couple of armed men that intended to kill some youngerman, now hiding behind Peter in the corner. She sped up, but it was to late. She heard the gun shot ringing through the night, Peter’sbody falling to the ground due to the combination of his previous injuries and this one. They had shot him in the stomach, she could make out, even from a distance, his costume turning crimson red as his blood coated his suit.
She kept repeating to herself, being unable to scream due to theshock. She could barely breathe. Her boot finally connected with the back of the closest man, kicking with force against the wall beforeshe turned to the other one, fist closed as she yanked him by thearm and forced him to look at her. Her fist connected to his jaw, shecould almost hear a popping sound, she simply threw his limp body to the ground and moved over to Peter, her knees crashing down next to his body.
“ Hey, come on… We did it. ”
She murmured softly, her trembling hands reaching over to him,his blood smearing her fingers, turning them red as she tried to fightsome tears away because he was unresponsive. A sob escapedher lips and she cradled his body, pulling him against her lap. She shook him gently, but there was still no response. God no. Please. Bending over, she put her ear to his chest there was a very faint heartbeat coming, but it was enough to bring back some life into her.
“ You can’t do this to me, Peter, not when I have yet to tell you that I love you, you idiot. ”
Gentle hands pulled up his mask, uncovering his mouth. Caroltook a deep breath before she slowly bent over and carefully brought her lips against his, sealing them in a desperate yet soft kiss.
