The OSCiLLOT Build & Blog Part II
The OSCiLLOT Build & Blog
SIXs is a 6 Oscillator/VCA/ADSR Monosynth inspired by Dr. Bob Moogās modular systems. There is also an accompanying modular Effects Unit comprised of a Chorus, Phaser, Delay, FilterBank, AD envelopes and LFOs triggered by an Audio-2-Trigger module. It sounds excellent right on top of SIXs or it can be used as a Send.
The last Device I built, Problems, was a West-Coast synthesis inspired source of uncertainty, Ratchet-laden dual drum machine/sequencer. It was definitely a bizarre instrument to say the least. In this series I wanted to build a synthesizer that was totally useable to any player, producer, enthusiast⦠whoever. So SIXs was born. A ātraditionalā East Coast style, subtractive monosynth. It uses 6 oscillators, envelope generators and voltage controlled amplifiers. You can see where the name comes from. It was inspired by the Moog System 55 and Keith Emersonās Moog modular. I used a lot pics, specs and info from the vast database on the web. There is so much information out there. Going into this I kept on getting more and more stoked as I built this thing because it started to sound really gnarly. The more small CV tweaks and LFO speeds I messed with the better each patch got. OSCiLLOT is an amazing platform. Cannot stress that enough. I was able to load up my paid for softsynths and compare it to this thing and SIXs can definitely hang. It sounds huge. Knew it was going to sound big but I had no idea how big! So I designed 7 patches that come along with this Device. Each one kind of shows-off an angle of the synth. This thing can be used for Leads and Bass-Lines. Thatās obvious. It can also do wilder sounds used for Effects and Noise (each Oscillator B has a Noise source built into it). The cool thing about OSCiLLOT is itās fun to design and build in. It has got so many modules⦠the possibilities are pretty much limitless. Itās limited only to the builderās imagination. And in saying that I encourage everyone who downloads SIXs to add-on their own modules and make their own patches and throw them up on the Cloud. I hope this synth is useful to some artist or producer out there. I ran it up against Arturiaās Modular-V, u-heās Bazille and a few of Native Instrumentās Reaktor synths like Monark. The thing definitely has some balls to it. Especially when you de-tune the oscillators and add some modulation. I used the Ladder filter as well, to get as close to that Moog sound as possible. I also built an Effects Unit to go along with SIXs. It contains a 3 Band Chorus, 8 Stage Phaser, Simple Delay and FilterBank along with AD envelope generators and an LFO. The mod-sources are triggered by the incoming sound-signal via an Audio-to-Trigger module which can be set within a range from 1 to 100. This Effects Unit sounds excellent as a Send for SIXs or right in its chain. I used the same Effects Moog did, only OSCiLLOT style. My goal was to design and build an OSCiLLOT version of a Moog Modular and SIXs definitely did not disappoint me. It sounds massive. I only hope people can be inspired by it and build upon it. I really hope some people can put it to good use. I hope you have as much fun playing/tweaking/modding the thing as I had building it. Have fun! Synth-On!!!
