Käte, Königsee, 18th January, 1939
Dear Anneliese!
First I want to thank you very warmly for your dear parcel, as well as for your Christmas and New Year wishes. As I sadly haven't had time to write until now — there's always something else getting in the way — I wanted to write to you today, since a very important reason compels me to: namely, Mr. Max Nader intends to sue you over your shoe bill and send you a payment demand, because Papa has firmly refused to pay anything for you. I'd like you to spare yourself the unnecessary expense, and I also hope you'll spare yourself — and us — the embarrassment; because it wouldn't only become known to the gentlemen at the office and at the post office, but it would get spread around in sewing-circles and so on besides — and anyway, you know the Naders' Hilde. From what I've gathered from Papa's talk, it's a mystery to him what you're doing with your wages, especially since Mariechen, when she was here in the summer, told us that you hadn't paid Aunt Klara anything at all for board and lodging, and Papa suspects you're spending it all in nightclubs. Because both Hellmut and Mariechen have complained that you mostly don't come home until nearly morning.
I can only advise you to sort this matter out straight away, to get it out of the way once and for all.
Now I'd like to ask you to write back to me as soon as possible.
With greetings and a kiss, Your Käte
PS: Please excuse my handwriting, but it's already 10 o'clock and I'm very tired.
