It had recently occurred to Jacquelyn that she spent a lot of time alone. And she wasn't entirely sure what to make of it. She didn't entirely mind being alone. Really, she didn't. Because sometimes people infuriated her (particularly her boss and some of her colleagues) while other times, she found that they really could get along. The trouble was that you never knew what you were going to get every time. Maybe it was better to be alone on occasion. That was very likely the reason that the thought hadn't crossed Jacquie's mind until she walked down the street one cold afternoon. She was going to her favorite music shop, Academy Records, and it occurred to her that her weekends were often very quiet.

She was just about to walk into the store when she felt the familiar but undesired feeling of craving a cigarette. She kept telling herself to quit. It was an awful habit and she was well aware that she was at high risk of getting lung cancer and croaking at the age of thirty-five. But she'd picked it up in college and now found it incredibly difficult to stop. She felt almost guilty for putting her body through so much crap, but only almost. Most of the time, she tried to put the possibly dismal future out of her mind.

  Personality: Max is afraid to disappoint people. Before rehab, he thought everyone was leaving him, but now he feels that he was the problem all along. However when he does feel comfortable around someone, he is fiercely loyal and protective. Often he will disregard his own well being to ensure someone elses happiness. He will go to great lengths to accomplish any goals he has.

  Brief History*: Max was born in New York City to a wealthy family who cared more about their reputation than they cared about each other. By the time he turned 15, he had grown tired of living that way and he started to rebel against his parents. He bought an electric guitar and started a band. They began to play small gigs, and eventually Max was earning money from it. He enjoyed the freedom that came from having an income separate from his parents, but they quickly put a stop to it, as they didn’t approve of his punk rock lifestyle. Max felt like he had lost the one thing that was his and his alone.

  At 17 he began a downward spiral. His girlfriend at the time, Cassie, was a junkie, and it seemed natural for him to become one too. Three years later, he was a shell of a person, focused only on finding more drugs, and more interesting drugs. It wasn’t about dulling the pain anymore. It began to control him, and he stole money from his parents to pay for drugs. When they cut him off, he stole money from Cassie. She found out and left him. A few days later he overdosed on heroin.

  His parents sent him to rehab because people had begun to notice that something was seriously wrong. Max had never felt more abandoned, and he swore that he would never again live under his parents roof. When he finally got out of rehab, he left New York with his guitar and a backpack and headed for Shorehaven to take over his Aunt Marie’s diner.
