As Luci continued to munch down on the smore she’d just completed construction on, Avery leaned over slightly and spoke quietly in Mark’s ear. “Thank you for inviting me. I know you all are going through such a difficult thing with Adriana’s father. I appreciate you wanting me to be here. I hope I can help somehow.” The veterinarian murmured before pulling back as Luci turned around and practically flew into her father’s arms, leaving smudges of chocolate from her mouth on the hem of his shirt.

Avery tiptoed through the darkness, hands out and brushing feather-light against the unknown terrain around them. This wasn’t the first time they’d stayed the night at Megan’s place, but… Well, it was the first time their insomnia decided to be mean to them while there. And they tried laying in the dark, waiting for sleep to claim them, but the dryness in their throat eventually made them cave.

They’d just have to deal with another sleepless night.

They felt around for the cupboard, and carefully opened it, wincing at the click that seemed to boom through the silence. Slowly, carefully, they filled their cup with water and nursed it as they thought about their misfortune.

Maybe it was their fault for sleeping so much during the day? They couldn’t help it. Even when they got good sleep, there were just times where their eyes would grow heavy, and they’d drift off… And when they opened their eyes again, hours were gone.

There was no rhyme or reason. They could chill out for hours with no repercussions, then fall asleep the next day doing the same thing. A racing heart and dropping stomach could keep them up at night, and during the day it could knock them out like it was nothing. Why did they have to be cursed like this?

A part of them thought about asking Lucas for help. Surely he had something. But no, they couldn’t bother him. This was his time to work.

They let out a sigh. Maybe their crush’s kitchen wasn’t the best place to think about this. They could just go back to the couch and-

The light suddenly flicked on.

“You’re still up?”

Avery jumped- just barely managing to keep their yelp held back. But they still spilt water on themself. Their face grew hot as they set the cup down and grabbed a paper towel to try and clean themself.

“Um, I guess, I, uh, just couldn’t, you know,” they rambled out, feeling like their whole body was ready to just disintegrate. “Sleeping is hard. Sometimes.”

Megan watched them with an eyebrow raised. There was a quick moment of panic due to the look on her face. Did they wake her?

“Well, if you’re not going to sleep, you could keep me company,” she said, then raised a hand to her mouth and let out a yawn. “My paper’s due tomorrow and I need to revise it again, so…”

“Ah, yeah, I can do that,” they mumbled as they tossed the paper towel into the trash. “Um, if you’re sure, I mean…”

“I wouldn’t have offered if I wasn’t sure,” she said in that usual ‘you’re so dense but I love you’ tone.

“Right, right…”

Once they found themself nestled into a chair in Megan’s office, then focused on the sound of clicking and typing instead of the thoughts swarming around their head. There were too many things to think about. But this was a nice distraction.

“What’s this paper on?” they asked, knowing full well they wouldn’t understand it.

Megan opened her mouth and a slew of science-y physics words came barreling out. She went on and on, only pausing to curse and fix something in her paper. Honestly, if she was just reading it out to them, then they wouldn’t have been surprised. But they didn’t mind. even if most of the words went over their head, it was still nice listening to her voice.

But fatigue had to hit at the worst time. They curled up in the chair and struggled to keep their eyes open, even when sunlight began peeking through the blinds. But it was hard, so hard… They could drift off for just a moment…
