and its not just about byler not being canon. its about deliberately setting up a boy yearning for another boy. its about throwing all these special details for these boys and giving them a classic romance arc. its about gaining the trust of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of queer teens and young adults, and making them feel seen for once. its about placing all these pieces of a puzzle for people to solve and this excitement for a real queer couple, proper and “genius” writing. it was about taking the hearts and the time of so many people and making them think “hey, maybe we finally are accepted” just to spit in their faces. that coming out scene spoke volumes of what straight people think about queers. it was performative and comical. they gave us this beautifully written closeted boy that could’ve been given a happy ending with the boy he loved. they set up this boy who was seemingly having internal homophobia, and he was going to overcome it in the sight of will’s strength and courage to stand up for himself and being unashamed of who he loves. what we got was a fucking joke. to throw all of these parallels back into our faces just to make it all for nothing.
thanks for wasting my time and showing me hollywood is the exact same as its always been duffers.

gosh watching season 2 of pjo has reminded me how much i love percy and annabeth. they were raised as complete opposites—percy grew up as just a regular boy, under the care of a loving mother and oblivious to the challenges he’d face in teenage-hood, whereas annabeth has never been able to have the luxury of living a “normal life.” the only two people that ever really looked out for annabeth was thalia and luke, and one is dead and the other is currently their enemy. meanwhile percy got to spend another school year with his mother, this time without a terrible stepdad, even with the monsters. he even meets tyson, albeit their friendship has yet to flourish. point is, percy knows what it is like to have people that love you, and how to love in return. annabeth is still finding it all so new, especially with percy. he is just so different from her and everyone she’s ever known, its baffling that he could just be so unabashedly kind. idk i love them so much
its just unfair. its so damn unfair. straight couple slop gets put out every single day, the stupidest fucking romance shows get released, yet nobody bats an eye. then someone comes along with a beautiful, well-written queer story, and it never sees the light of day. dont get me wrong, many straight romance shows and movies are amazing, this isn’t me bashing them. and theres all kinds of badly written queer content. the point im trying to make though is that bad romance can exist all the time, if its between a man and a woman. nobody cares.
meanwhile, being queer is a battle every fucking day. sometimes its being rejected by your entire family, being kicked out, being killed or just treated with disrespect your entire damn life. so every time a queer couple makes it to mainstream audiences, its a win. and its sad. we’re so desperate to be portrayed as normal finally, to just be treated like any other couple. yet time and time again this shit happens.
and yeah, we have a right to criticize portrayals of queer folk in media. i deserve so much more fucking respect than what these people put in films and shows and tell people its “amazing representation!!” never letting a straight guy do a queer’s person job. because at the end of the day, they will never understand what it is like to want nothing more than to fit in only to be cast aside just because of the people i love.
hey so why the FUCK was ep 7 originally titled the paladin and the cleric. why the blue and yellow. why the songs and score for mike being centered around closeted feelings and his fucking closet getting more screen time than most of the other characters. am i just being schizo rn?? hello???

honestly im not even that surprised by the duffers, just disappointed. this isn’t the first time this has happened, but i’d been hoping we’ve moved on from this. queerbaiting and using queer characters as props for the plot and character devices. now a small clarification, i wouldnt consider myself a big byler fan, by that i mean i wasnt emotionally invested. that being said though, i am shaking my head as i write this.
but as i said, im not surprised. id like to pull a parallel from a favorite show of mine, gotham. so.. spoilers warning
in gotham, there was a certain ship i LOVE and was dearly invested in. oswald and edward 🥹 when they first met, it was freaking amazing. oswald was this powerful boss and edward was still a little nerd, i immediately shipped it. they werent childhood best friends, and both were seemingly straight.
however, oswald was knocked down and met again when he was at his lowest. edward has always been a yearner, and he YEARNED for this man. it was never confirmed he had a crush on him, but he sure acted like it. at first, it seemed we were winning.
then they.. gave edward a new female love interest..??? what the fuck..?? RIGHT when oswald realized he was in love with edward?? it was like he was a completely different character, standing up oswald FOR THIS RANDOM GIRL đź’” (note: she looked exactly like his love interest from season 1 it was a whole arc but i digress)
anyway to avoid any more spoilers, a lot of stuff happens and they have a friends to yearning to enemies arc..? then at the end they had this dramatic reconciliation, only for oswald to say he thought of edward as a brother.
a BROTHER.
the man he was just in love with two seasons ago.
anyway, point im trying to make is shows have been doing this for years now. even if there is confirmed queer couples in a show, like gotham or stranger things, it doesn’t matter. they will never make queer people in a mainstream show as anything more than side characters. they will always be afterthoughts and cast aside, or be given the worst endings that if they were straight would be completely different.
if they were straight, people wouldve eaten UP the slowburn childhood friends to lovers arc right away. but because its something condemned by society? its nothing but a risk of losing shareholders and money. at the end of the day, all the producers and big guys care about is how to milk the most money out of people by queerbaiting without saying it outright so they can keep their republican audiences, letting it pay off for nothing to keep the actually important people happy.
im not surprised byler wasnt canon. its been like this for decades and i will never expect anything less.
