Soul Step is a cool label that works with artists to bankroll their releases and then splits the spoils with them and reinvests into the next big release. For anyone who’s ever tried to release their own music without a major label supporting them, you can appreciate how cool of a model this is. This is Matt’s SIXTH release with Soul Step and I’m ashamed that this is the first time I’ve listened to his work. This is a compilation of singles Matt wrote back in 2015 and released to his fans for free. It’s funky, it’s legit blue-eyed soul realness and it’s the best parts of yacht rock and 70’s throwback pop without ever sounding trite or cheesy. Some of these tracks sound like @doobiebrothersofficial b-sides, others sound a little like @spoontheband when they were still more funky than serious. His voice is buttery smooth, the instrumentation is as tight and soulful as anything your parents listened to in a big conversion van somewhere in the woods, and i’ll be damned if there isn’t also an near objectively perfect cover of @foofighters Everlong, because of course there is. This is unlike anything else i’ve featured on VINYLEXAMS thus far, but I’m thrilled to share it with you.
