āIāve been wanting to kiss you for a whileā whatever pairing youād like!! š„°
today we learned: I am incapable of writing kiss prompts that only have one (1) kiss.
anyway! this is set in my still developing AU. tentative title Liebe ist Leben, allein sein ist Tod. all you need to know is that 1) Klara gets to keep her baby 2) she and Mathilde are both in Hamburg and catching Feelingsā¢.
Klara WƤscherās not quite sure when she and Mathilde Blumhard found themselves in an odd sort of routine. All she knows is that it started shortly after she realised Genevieve hated coming to work with her.
Leaving her daughter with strangers had never been an option, not after everything. Instead, sheād found herself down the hallway one evening, talking herself into knocking. Mathildeās door had swung open seconds after and Klara had blurted out her request in a rush.
The shock on the older girlās face had nearly made her turn on her heel to leave, but Mathildeās hand had shot out to catch her as she agreed. Klara thinks now she knows why sheād agreed, but it had taken her by surprise at the time.
At nearly three, Genevieve had nodded seriously but with tears glinting in her eyes the first time Klara had left her with Mathilde. Sheād almost wanted to stay, suddenly second-guessing the decision that would take her away for longer than sheād ever been separated from her little girl before.
Her daughterās nothing if not resilient and adaptable, though, and it had taken her hardly any time to settle into a new schedule and having a new person in their lives.
One night, Klara had come home later than usual to find her baby girl already fast asleep in bed and Mathilde waiting up at her tiny kitchen table. Sheād stopped in the bedroom long enough to kiss her daughterās cheek and then shut the door softly as she left.
Stumbling over half-formed apologies about how caught up sheād gotten as she reentered the kitchen, it had taken her several long moments to realise that Mathilde was simply staring at her. Her words had trailed off into silence slowly and all sheād been able to do was stare back in confusion.
Without a single word, Mathilde had suddenly stood up and stepped softly towards Klara, who had barely managed to keep from flinching.
(She hates that every sudden movement towards her throws her mind back to that moment in the barn and hopes desperately that it will stop one day.)
Though sheād resisted more than a sharp intake of breath, Klara had found herself backing towards the far wall until her back met the narrow space next to the window. She knows now that it hadnāt been from fear, really, when Mathildeās always been so mild-mannered.
It had been more of a feeble attempt to put off what sheād felt in the last few months of friendship. An attempt to keep it from becoming more, because Klara had sworn never to fall in love again.
Against her wishes and what sheād told herself was the smart thing to do, though, her feelings had grown, more than sheād realised until this moment.
It would turn out that Mathilde was aware of precisely how strong her emotions were and what she wanted. At least if the way sheād pulled Klara into a kiss was anything to go by, fingers tangled in red curls as her hands slipped around almost automatically to hold Mathilde closer.
Her kiss had been tentative at first, hardly more than a brush against Klaraās lips. It had taken Klara several seconds to respond, but when she did, it was with a quiet hum of contentment. As she returned the kiss, she couldnāt help but giggle slightly at the thought that this was how first kisses should be.
Sheās not an expert by any means, but thereās something comforting about the way Mathilde kisses. The way it feels like itās about them, the way it doesnāt feel like Mathilde wants anything more than to just kiss her.
When they separated, theyād both been breathless and flushed, fingers twined together as they half-fell onto the kitchen chairs.
āIāve been wanting to kiss you for a while, you know,ā Mathilde had whispered, looking up almost shyly from beneath her eyelashes.
That sentence alone had taken Klaraās breath away even more, a strange relief at the confirmation that theyād been feeling the same all these months. As a mother, though, she has to put Genevieve first, and so she has to ensure her daughterās needs arenāt forgotten.
Klara herself canāt bear the thought of someone leaving again, and so perhaps her ask is slightly selfish. She can tell how much her little girl loves Mathilde and how much sheās loved in return, though, so sheās able to tamp down the sneaking suspicion that itās solely for her.
āPromise you wonāt leave if this, if we, donāt work out,ā she says, not quite meeting Mathildeās eyes as she runs her thumb gently over the back of the other girlās hand.
āIām not going anywhere,ā Mathilde responds, leaning across the table to drop another gentle kiss on Klaraās lips, and it scares her how easy it is to believe.
Theyāre young and sheās been promised forever once before, a promise that had been broken the worst way it possibly could have been. Something about the way Mathilde says it, so assured and calm, nothing like Alfredās overly impassioned declarations, makes it all feel right.
It makes her feel like maybe she doesnāt have to do it all alone anymore, like maybe she could do more than survive from day to day again.
Thereās countless other questions to answer and tiny pieces to figure out, they know. None of those problems really matter in this moment, though, when itās just Klara, Mathilde, and the promise of something more.

Chapter 1
She knows as soon as the trial starts that sheās going to lose. Truthfully, her only chance was for Alfred to claim the child as his and marry her, but he wonāt meet her eyes across the cold courtroom. Heās surrounded by family and friends she vaguely recognises, while the babyās slight kicks under her freshly ironed white dress are the only sign she has that maybe sheās not entirely alone.
He shrugs nonchalantly when the judge asks if heās the father, smirks and jerks his thumb at the two men behind him. Matthias and Gerhard (Klara remembers, now, how they would tag along on her dates with Alfred) are both claiming to have been with her and she knows no one will believe them, they canāt, havenāt they seen how she looks at Alfred?
āDas stimmt doch nicht,ā she cries, daring to cross the courtroom and reach for his hand. He steps back like sheāll spread her dishonour to him (dishonour heās the cause of) and his mother steps in between them. Slowly she backs away, sitting down heavily in the uncomfortable wooden chair and blinking tears out of her eyes. Throughout all of this, the judge has barely spared her a glance, shuffling papers in a way that makes it clear he doesnāt care what she says or thinks.
She hears the gavel slam, hears the judgeās clinical, objective voice declare the case closed, that Alfred Ill wonāt have to recognise Klara WƤscherās child as his. Her body goes numb and all she can do is scream āNein! Nein!ā as heās rushed away and sheās left behind, not a single person looking back at her. Then, everything goes hazy and quiet, like it used to when she was little and hid under her bed when her parents fought. Somehow, she makes it out of the courthouse and her feet carry her across town, her fatherās voice echoing in her ears.
āWenn er dich nicht heiraten wird, musst du nicht wieder nach Hause kommen,ā heād told Klara on his way to work that morning. Heās barely held a conversation with her since she found out she was expecting a child, wonāt look at her as the signs of pregnancy become more obvious, and now heāll never have to do either again.Ā
(Maybe her mother wouldāve understood; she was so young when they had her, after all. But her motherās been gone for years, died when Klara was eleven and needed her mother most.)
She looks up, realising sheās found her way to the Blumhard barn, the first place sheād felt at home, the first place Alfred kissed her.Ā
The place where...no, she canāt, wonāt, think about that, not now.Ā
The double doors are already slightly ajar and Klaraās turning to leave when she hears familiar steps pacing. Slipping through the gap in the doors, she sees Alfred, hands in his pockets and looking significantly more disheveled than a mere hour ago.
āAlfred, how could you?ā she sobs before she can think twice, half-running across the barn and pounding her fists into his chest. He steps back and she nearly falls, catching herself like sheās gotten so good at doing. His eyes, when she dares to look at them again, are filled with pleading and what she thinks might be a hint of regret.
āKlƤri, please understand, Schatz. You have your whole life ahead of you, Iād be holding you back,ā he says, staring at her like this should justify his public rejection and denial of their love, of what their love has created. Klara knows better than to believe this, though. Sheās seen him look enviously at the businessmen on the trains passing by, sees how he has ambitions beyond their tiny hometown that she canāt help him reach because her family doesnāt have money or connections.
āNot anymore, I donāt. Not after you betrayed me,ā she says after a brief pause, tamping down her emotions like she does for the rest of the world and never thought sheād have to for him. He looks back at her blankly and she clenches her fists slightly.Ā
āYou wonāt say youāre the father of our child, youāve taken away any respect, any future here, that I might have had,ā she whispers, voice breaking more than sheād like on āour.ā Alfred steps closer at that, jaw tightening like her fatherās does when heās angry. He grasps her chin in one hand almost gently, lifting her face until their eyes meet.Ā
āDonāt you see I love you too much to let you stay with me? Iād give up everything for you to be happy,ā he snaps, and this time itās Klara who pulls away briefly, angry and suddenly afraid of the man she loves (loved?)Ā
āHappy?ā she says, the syllables of the word sticking in her throat, āAlfred, IāmāIām only happy when Iām with you and you justāyou justāā She grabs at his shirt, tries to make him look at her, listen, and understand that, whatever he says heās done for her, the last thing sheās going to be now is happy.Ā
āLet go, KlƤri,ā he says, but she wonāt, she canāt, because she knows if she lets go, heāll leave.Ā
āAlfred, Alfred bitteāwir lieben uns dochāāĀ
āI said let go, Klara,ā he snaps, and then his hands are encircling her wrists and heās pushing her back, hard.
Alfredās push sends Klara tumbling to the ground, her left leg twisting underneath her as she tries to catch her balance, arms shifting to cover her stomach seconds too late. She hits the floor of the barn hard and immediately pulls herself up and onto her back as best she can. In the back of her mind, she dimly registers that her left leg wonāt move, but most of her attention is drawn to the blood spilling out from between her legs and the pain in her abdomen like sheās never felt before.Ā
āIt...it was an accident,ā Alfred whispers like heās trying to convince himself, his face blanching as he watches the blood seep into her dress. Klara can feel tears pooling at the corners of her eyes, but heās not looking at her anymore, and before she can say anything, he spins on his heel and runs out of the barn. She does cry, then, biting her hand to muffle the noise as much as possible.
Klaraās not sure how long she lies there, unsuccessfully fighting back fresh waves of tears every time the cramps start again. She knows sheās been crying for hours, the emptiness inside her and the growing evening shadows tell her that much. The tears spilling out of her now in breath-stealing shudders are all the ones sheās bottled up and carried around, the pain of today momentarily buried under the pain of the last six years. Sheās nothing if not good at hiding her tears, however, and so she chokes down the cry rising in her throat when she hears a rustle outside the barn and sees a faint shadow in the doorway.Ā
* * *
Itās the sound that draws her to the barn first, the sound sheās sure is someone crying and trying very hard to not sound like they are. At first she thinks maybe itās a child--God knows enough children try to sneak around the Blumhard barn--but the sinking feeling in her stomach doesnāt go away and she knows it isnāt.Ā
She steps in quietly, and whoever it is must have heard her because the sobbing instantly stops.Ā
āAlfred?ā the voice calls, and Mathildeās heart drops because itās the same voice she heard screaming at the trial earlier.Ā
āKlara?āĀ
Shuffling then, a muffled āScheiĆeā that makes Mathilde flinch even as she steps forward. The light in the barn is dim but she can still make out Klaraās form crumpled on the floor, the bottoms of her bare feet dirty and one of her legs twisted, the knee swollen in a way that looks wrong.
And then the blood. So much blood, and at first Mathilde thinks itās from her leg but then her eyes travel up and Klaraās white dress, the one Mathilde always sees her running around in (and sheās pretty sure itās the only one she owns), is stained, blood like a dark poppy spreading over the hem.Ā
āKlara, was ist los?ā Mathilde says, unable to stop the panic from rising in her voice.Ā
āNichts,ā Klara spits, and if Mathilde had had doubts before that it was Klara WƤscher huddled in her barn she doesnāt know, the derision in her tone so strong when itās clear that something is definitely wrong. Klaraās dark red hair is matted against her head, almost the same color of the blood. āLass mich, Mathilde.ā
āIām not leaving you, youāre hurt,ā Mathilde says, and before Klara can stop her she kneels down and gently places her hand on Klaraās knee. The younger girl stiffens. āWhat happened?ā
āI fell,ā Klara says, and Mathilde knows sheās lying but the look on her face is a challenge, daring Mathilde to question her.Ā
āYou... but youāre bleeding.ā
Klaraās face pales as if sheās suddenly seeing the blood for the first time. āNein,ā she chokes out, and then sheās scrabbling away from Mathilde and clutching at her stomach, āNein nein neinā repeated over and over.Ā
āIāmāIām going to call the doctor,ā Mathilde says, because someone has to do something, but Klaraās hand reaches out and seizes Mathildeās wrist in an iron grip, fear in her pale blue eyes.Ā
āNo,ā she says, āno, Iām fine, reallyāā
āDoch Klara your legāund dein Kindāā
āIām fine,ā Klara repeats, stubbornly trying to stand, her nails digging half moons into Mathildeās arm.Ā
āKlara, you shouldnātāā but no sooner has she said it than Klara tries to stand and immediately cries out, falling back down and nearly pulling Mathilde with her. Her fingers leave small scratches on Mathildeās wrist and she snatches them quickly away.Ā
āKein Arzt,ā Klara whispers, hands now going back to protectively encircling her stomach.Ā
āAber dein Kindā¦ā Mathilde whispers, and either Klara has not heard her or sheās choosing to ignore her. āAt leastādo you have somewhere to stay?ā
Klara shakes her head, too quick.Ā
āOkay, wellāā Mathilde glances around the barn. āDu kannstādu kannst doch hier bleiben,ā she says, and as soon as sheās said it she knows itāsāwell if not the right thing to do, then something.Ā
Klara looks like sheās about to argue but she can only manage a whimper. Mathilde takes a half-step toward her and Klara scrabbles back, her back now against the rough wood of the barn. Hay sticks to the patches of blood on her dress.Ā
āKlaraā¦āĀ
āGeh,ā Klara says. āPlease, Mathilde. You can--you can come check on me in the morning if it will really make you feel better, but Iāll be fine.ā She tries to manage a wobbly smile but all she can do is grimace. āMy⦠my father will be looking for me so I wonāt⦠I wonāt stay too long.āĀ
āNatürlich,ā Mathilde says, and tries to pretend for Klara even though they both know Klaraās father will do no such thing. What little Mathilde knows of Klaraās parents other than by gossip was only further cemented when she had no one at the trial with her today.
And if thereās one thing Mathildeās painfully, achingly familiar with, itās that sort of emptiness.
āBisā¦bis Morgen, dann,ā Mathilde says, and Klara nods, her eyes unfocused, not even looking at Mathilde. āAre you sureā¦āĀ
āIām fine,ā Klara says again. āIāll see you in the morning.āĀ
Mathilde presses her lips together and nods before finally allowing herself to turn her back on the girl crumpled in her barn, only registering as she closes the door that Klara has started crying again.

I am gonna write fanfic for Besuch der alten Dame and I WILL give Claire and MathildeĀ (andĀ ONLY Claire and MathildeĀ bc Alfred can go and jump down aĀ dark holeĀ for all that i care) a happy end and if it's the LAST thingĀ I ever do...
This is gonna be the most self-indulgent thing I have ever written and I don't care. I JUST WANT THEM TO BE HAPPY IS THAT SO HARD???
This entire mess could have been AVOIDED if Mathilde and ClaireĀ had eloped the second it was clear that Alfred was going to use BOTH so he could marry into money.
The Moral of the Story:
Yes it IS morally okay toĀ extort your former hometown into murdering the guy that indirectly killed your unborn child and forced you into prositution. Good luck Girl, I'm rooting for you. WE ARE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!!!
