The 94th Regiment - Scots Brigade - at the Defense of Matagorda, March 21st 1810, Richard Simkin
The fortress was north of Cadiz and was bombarded by the French. Later the 94th Foot evacuated the fort with only Major Lefebure of the Royal Engineers left who was responsible for the detonation of a mine to destroy the fort. However, he was killed by a cannonball and the French occupied the fort of Matagorda.

One part of an illustrated “memoir-with-maps” I made for Texas Monthly the summer my book came out. Just re-discovered it. If my memory is correct, Jim Word was a legendary self-taught Southwestern archeologist, anthropologist, conservationist, and historian. He was a leader in the Texas Archeological Society, which created an award in his name.

My family is headed down to the beach for a few days, which means my life is about to consist of 1) wearing shorts and tank tops and swimsuits 2) walking along the beach looking for shells 3) sitting by the water as night falls and watching the fiddler crabs come out 4) sitting on the pier and staring at the waves 5) sitting inside the camper and reading ghost stories while my family fishes (fishing is the most boring thing in the world to me) 6) going into town to go shopping and get snow cones 7) taking Trudy for walks around the beach 8) swimming, ofc 9) walking back to the camper from the showers in the dark, singing and letting the night air cool my skin 10) falling asleep with the ghosts of waves washing over me This beach is one of my favorite places in the world
