local dumb bitch hoards things for so long shecan’t remember what the meme is anymore.

           SHE CAN’T SHOW one of her children her tears, but they come nevertheless. it’s why she has to reach forward so quickly to pull him into an embrace so that she can just rest her head on the top of his and shield him from her ugliness. time and time again, her children surprise her with affection when she’s done nothing to deserve it, and she never really knows how to respond other than just to hug them.

        the suns have shifted their orbit as they do every year, weather patterns shifting just so. gallifreyan summer had arrived, bringing it’s usual unbearable heat waves. thankfully technology is far enough advanced that they’re hardly bothered in the citadel or major cities, but the shifting sands beyond practically radiate the heat right back. hopefully the summer rains will come sooner rather than later.

        still, standing in the midst of the lungbarrow chapterhouse she could feel the heat sinking into her skin from the outside. the great structure looked severely neglected, and quite frankly theta wasn’t certain how it was still alive, even now. the complex pulsed with an energy that sang to her, much like the tardis, urging her forward when all she could do was stand in the entrance to the great hall and it’s upended tables, disregarded furniture, and it’s dimly lit corners.

      “i wasn’t expecting this.” she murmured, glancing over her shoulder briefly if only to break her gaze from the depressing state of the chapterhouse. “it’s been left to rot. to suffer. the housekeeper has fled. i’d almost forgotten, i think.” she murmured, reaching out a hand to rest against the wall that was alive beneath her palm. “there’s nothing left of lungbarrow.”

       her headaches have returned. it’s difficult some days to work past them, but she often does by distraction. today her distraction is training. gallifreyans aren’t combative physically by nature, but during the war she had been a general, a general expected to fight hand to hand if needed. now it’s just a coping mechanism, familiar movements that pull her muscles and work her until near exhaustion - sometimes sleep comes, sometimes it does not. arcadia is used to it now, the nightmares, the thumping in her head a double beat that reminds her that despite rassilon being dispatched, his hold on her still lingers.

      breathing hard, arcadia stretches her fingers and limbs. her body is sore in a good way, because soreness means she is still alive. she nods once at her sparring partner, dismissing him, before he leaves her to the empty training ground. her left eye twitches with a wince and she drinks greedily from a water bottle. sure, her time could be better spent with sciences and building and being productive, but at least this she doesn’t have to think beyond punch, kick, and dodge.

      there may not be a war anymore, but it has left its scars on arcadia oakdown.

The Master’s bristly chin rests on the Doctor’s shoulder.  Arms  slide around his old friend’s waist like additional appendages, and he reaches for a fist full of marshmallows, which he places directly in his mouth.

     “Mhm,” he confirms, with a smirk.

“Well, you can’t have any now. I’m going to drink yours too.” He’s smiling, and it’s audible in his voice, but he pretends it isn’t.

“I’m going to have the rest of the marshmallows, too.”
