FROM THE OUTSIDE, LOOKING IN
MassArt MFA 3rd Semester Final Review Installation + Video
This installation was created based on childhood memories and my family VHS tapes from the late 1980ā²s/early 1990ā²s. This is a time period that I have been thrown back into due to a sudden change in my family dynamic, the selling of my childhood home, and the discovery of all my familyās home videos.Ā
Materials used: Wallpaper (recreated from memory and printed), Pink Carpet, House Plant, Lamps with Pink Bulbs, Pink Bean Bag Chair, Shear Pink Curtains, 1985 RCA TV, Mirror, Wall Clock, Ashtray with Cigarettes (for visual and scent), Picnic Table, Pledge (for scent), 6-Pack of Beer, Wiffle Ball and Bat, *Artist Handmade Book, Compiled VHS footage.
The video, which plays on an old 1985 RCA Colortrak TV, is compiled of the found footage, played on a loop. While watching and transferring the VHS tapes, I began to notice moments of repetition - Blowing out birthday candles, smoking cigarettes, people waving at the camcorder - and began to edit them together. This process ofĀ repetitionĀ began to function the same way in which my memory works...never remembering one particular instance, but instead lumping them all together as one major series of events.
This is my first time working with video and installation and I will continue to push this project even further in my next and final semester at MassArt. Stay tuned for the progress and the end result this coming May!
