this was for a magical girl crossover collab on instagram, where we all took our magical girl characters and designed them to be in a different series 💕
comparison between their normal designs. these makes me laugh a little. just... when I was drawing, I thought 'jeez, these look to similar to their prexisting designs, don't they??' NO I DON'T THINK THEY DO WHEN THEY'RE SIDE BY SIDE. I am pretty happy with the fact they're still all still recognizable at least... a lot of aqua's design specifically does reference some of her older designs!!
I was a HUGE winx fan as a kid (I think it did come on the same channel/day as mew mew power did?? along with ygo.. like what a good lineup. formative to me.) I haven't revisited it in years, maybe I should...? 👀
for these I drew more inspo from the upgraded winx forms like enchantix etc rather than the base forms (as iconic as those are, I really wanted to do more detailed designs, since this was a design-based collab, yk?) I love that winx style gave me an excuse to go as ham on the sparkles as I always want to. also, the proportions!! They are like bugs, to me... kind of fun but also very weird for me to draw. I def still added my own lil touches/style in there when coloring 🤷♂️

I ended up simplifying them a lot to make them work more for that and changing up colors, but I think it's fun to show these early stage concepts sometimes🥲 rip masayume's big awesome boa!!! It just wasn't working for the angle BUT if I ever revisit these designs, rest assured she'll get it back. also you can read my silly little notes and see how I just. ignored the ideas I had for the wings when I actually sat down to draw them lol like sometimes it truly does turn into a 'no i dont think i will go with that idea' flow state where I just black out designing smth 😭
I originally kind of wanted mira's wings to come up behind her head and look like donkey ears, but i just could NOT make it work. if anything, sapote's lil headband wing situation looks more like ears 😔 oh well!!
