Art Tatum was playing from the speakers. The volume wasn’t unbearable, but in the eerie mid-afternoon quietness of the casino and the lingering thudding in his temples, all the glissandos and key changes made Iwai want to drown the nearest pot plant in bullets. There was, however, small talk to do to finish off a business transaction with the heavy-jowled man before him, and Iwai tried to keep the smile on his face. A waitress wearing far too short a dress came by to refill their cups, and Iwai raised his head with his smile turned up a notch, because those were some very fine legs indeed.

His companion, Tung, caught the exchange and chortled.

“This is why you’re still a bachelor,” he remarked, playfully scathing.

“Five years ago you were the one telling me you didn’t want to get married,” Iwai tittered back, stirring some creamer into his coffee.

“One day you’ll call yourself a hypocrite.”

Tung issued a soft grunt as his mobile buzzed, and he reached into the inner pocket of his probably Brooks Brothers or Fioravanti suit to check the screen.

“Speaking of which. Sorry man, the kindy called. My youngest one caught some virus.”

“Hey, family first. Good seeing you, Tung.”

They exchanged bows before Tung made his hasty exit.

Nursing his fresh coffee, Iwai looked toward the brand new aquarium that Tung had installed smack-bang at the center of the restaurant. Tables were arranged around it, so that diners could all enjoy the marvel –Tung had always been a show off with too much money, and spending it on a ginormous fish tank for his casino was definitely one way to do it. The thing had to be something like five swimming pools.

There was a hubbub of activity as a uniformed team of a dozen men fussed over the tank. A few were checking the thermostat; another couple were inspecting the water pH. Other than that, Iwai had no idea what they were doing, and he turned his attention to the few who were getting ready to pop a few more fish into the tank. Amongst the luminescent blue, the fish rolled along in accordance to their chaotic fish traffic. There were big ones, small ones, ones that were flat as pancakes, ones that looked like yams. Fish that were utterly oblivious to the amount of money that had changed hands to get them here.

A tall and handsome man, visibly the chief of operations, stood calmly in the background of all the activity. He wore beige chinos, and a light grey linen shirt on top. The outfit was simple, but fitted his slim figure with the effortless precision that only expensive clothes could do. The quiet confidence of his stance suggested late 20s to early 30s, but his fringe, which was just a little too long, accentuated the boyishness of his face.
