Two days ago we were hiking the Marymere Falls Trail and on our way back, a man in his 70s asked us if the hike up to the falls was difficult because his wife had cancer. It wasn’t that challenging, but there were a lot of uphill climbs, so we told him it probably wasn’t the best idea for her to go up there. I wanted to tell him sorry to hear about his wife, but wasn’t sure if it’d offend him or if he’d think I pity him so I didn’t. His wife finally catches up, she’s holding her cane, and he breaks the news to her and says “honey, you probably won’t be able to see the falls today because the way up will be too difficult for you.” She responded, “aww I won’t get to see the falls?” The disappointment in her face killed me. As we near the end of the trail, I was thinking about that encounter. It was so devastating, I started crying. Not sure what stage of cancer she was in, but her husband probably took her on this trip because she didn’t have much time left. I wanted her to see the falls so badly. Maybe it was her dying wish to see as much of Olympic as possible. I’m glad she’s there because there’s definitely some healing powers for the soul by just being there. That reminded me how important it is to be there for your loved ones, to take care of your health, to cherish every moment, and to give back to those around you. #20180902 #olympicnationalpark #marymerefalls #washingtonstate https://www.instagram.com/p/BnT9AZ1h9-iiFvWR63sFvJwzp_DP0pyDDJXp0Y0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=127cr7laz3uo3
