Mary Garber was a pioneer in women’s sports journalism. She got her start working at the Twin City Sentinel in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, proving her talent in sportswriting when the paper’s sports writer enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. For 30 years, she was the only woman to cover the ACC Conference. Garber also covered two black high schools in the region, as well as the traditionally black Winston-Salem State University at a time when black athletes simply didn’t receive coverage in mainstream papers. In 2005, Garber became the first woman to win the Associated Press Sports Editors Red Smith Award.Â
