In regards to designing a relatable and interesting character - you just need to try and think of a character say a bulky dude and think of what characteristics you associate with that kind of person. Maybe include some of those qualities in that character to make them seem more realistic. From there think of what and how this person would function, what kind of life they’d lead etc. From there you can start to form an idea of this character and think how their careers life and personality would mould their appearance ( if they’re a person who does a lot of physical labour and works a ton they’ll probably have some muscle and wear practical clothes. If they’re a office worker they’ll probably be less muscular but have a bit o chub in places or if they do exercise… ) basically observe how people act in life and how it affects them. That how I design characters nowdays at least xp.
