"Michael you don't even come into work anymore!" You try not to raise your voice at him.

"Don't you think I try to?" His voice sounds dangerous.

You sigh. "I know you do. But I'm here to help. Let me help."

"You can't."

"Yes I can." You grab his arm as he starts to walk away. "Michael, listen. I've helped you deal with everything for years-"

"This is different, Y/N. I'm putting you in danger." His eyes fail to meet yours.

"You're not doing anything. This is my decision."

He turns around and stares at you. "And this is my life, not yours."

You step back, hurt ringing clear in your face. You take a few breaths to prevent yourself from exploding. "What's the worst that could happen?"

"Milo." He almost whispers.

"Me helping you has nothing to do with-"

"He wants to destroy everything!" His voice turns into a growl. You take another step back. "He's insane! He's going to kill you Y/N! And that's on my shoulders!"

His face, just for a moment, narrows. His eyes turn red. Immediately, he turns away from you.

There is a moment of deadly silence between the two of you. He doesn't face you. His head is hung, back hunched over as if he's trying to hide from you.

All of your anger melts away. You wrap your arms around him, resting your face on his back. You feel him stiffen for a second, protesting your touch. Then, he turns around and returns your hug.

"I'm sorry." He whispers.

"It's okay." You hug him tighter.

"Are- are you scared of me?"

You pull away and look into his eyes. There is a sense of insecurity in them you've never seen before. You put your hand on his cheek.

"Michael, I could never be afraid of you."

He pulls you back into his arms. "I'm sorry I yelled at you."

"Will you stop fighting me now?" You look at him.

He nods slightly.

"And besides," you continue, "I know you'll never let Milo hurt me anyway."

You feel him smile and relax.
