#marvel fail

After about a half dozen listens to the Infinity War Commentary with the writers (Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely) and the directors (Joe and Anthony Russo), here is what was said during the Bruce and Natasha reunion scene:

Just as Bruce speaks, one of the writers says, "And here we have just a taste of a reunion." The four commenters are quiet and let the two actors deliver their lines (which is nice because they yaked over most of the film), and then Joe Russo (I think) says, "Things are just moving too fast for love." 💨❤️🖤💜💚

Pardon me, but son of a beeotch! Could they not have said that during a US interview instead of burying it in a Vietnamese newspaper and making us wait for the freaking commentary??? Their whole attitude was, we have no time for fan service or character development unless it’s absolutely necessary to the 100-mile-a-minute plot.

Meanwhile, over in the comics . . . Hulk and Bruce Banner had a brief resurrection in Uncanny Avengers #15-17

So with the release of comics on its destined Wednesday, of course the big blow up is issue #1 of the new Captain America Comic. ( also coinciding with online news write-ups)   There is a lot of outrage, and honestly its 100% warranted. This is the main part about it....its EXTREMELY LAZY WRITING. Its not ‘ground breaking’, its not a good way to ‘shake things up and get people off kilter’.   I’ve read different articles where it is said the point of Mark Spencer was to take away how comfortable people were with the character. To article and review authors applauding Spencer for ‘being strong enough to take the character in this controversial direction’.  That in this politically charged time right now, this is a story that is reflecting those feelings.....I personally call loud BULL SHIT on that. I call Bull Shit on all of it.

Regardless of how they try to pull back out of this one really unless in the end they literally retcon ALL OF IT (and even then).  The damage is done, the crappy ‘shock value’ lever has been pulled.  Making the statement that Steve is Hydra and always has been, even if they flip it to go ‘but look what GOOD he did, that he went against all of that..blah blah blah’  again is a SUPER CHEAP move.  Again its Lazy writing...its lazy thought. 

If the whole point of this complete farce was to make Steve a villain, to show the uncertainty, the ugly truth of the political system, the hope that seems to be thwarted at every turn, the utter disdain and ugliness that people are using to pit neighbor against neighbor.  There are so many ways you could do that, so many ways that you could show those very feelings in a lot more interesting, pointed, and BELIEVABLE ways.   But this requires forethought and the need to have build up...thing is you can do all that and still have a ‘shock’ to hook someone.  Not just a ‘HEY EVERYONE STEVE IS HYDRA! HAIL HYDRA! OH SEE LOOK WHAT WE DID HERE! LOOK AT HOW HARD AND DEVIL MAY CARE WE ARE’ 

Now this whole ‘we needed to shake up 75 years worth of back story’ thing is sad...very VERY sad.   Even if in issue two there is some kind of back peddle, you still have Steve asserting he’s a bad guy...that he’s Hydra, that he’s on the side of a group that was effectively the nazi party, even partially or for 2 seconds, I think is so EXTREMELY disrespectful to the creators of the character on a number of levels. For the reason that they came to make Steve as he was. As the core the character has been for those 75 years. (Sure there have been bumps in the road, but what we are talking about here isn’t a bump but a brick wall being hit at 90 miles an hour)

I have not read Captain America #1, I found myself being RELIVED it wasn’t in my pull list today, I have no plans to read this comic...not #1 or #2 or anything else.  I am not going to give it my money or my time.  There are lots of cries of ‘don’t make a judgement till you read it!’ ‘remember its just a comic book’...and yes it is just a comic book, just a story.  But its a story that has a lot of ties connected to it and not ones that should be cut just for the sake of trying to do something new.  More so when that move is seemingly so thought out, or if it was, it was done with an eye to only what a few wanted and not to a larger picture.  So I hope enough people will turn their back on this story line, that there is enough push back that Marvel creative head see that maybe events like that aren’t the way to go.  I hope, but am cynical enough to know it probably won’t happen.  So I will keep the cap I know and love in my heart, and the cap now...this hydra cap...will not exists in my world.

From Captain America: Civil War--The Junior Novel (No Spoilers, Just Bitching)

Well, if it helps, you’re not alone. I haven’t been able to find any reference to it in the Marvel release calendar (ah, my old nemesis, we meet again) either -- but then, this would hardly be the first time I’ve had this sort of trouble with it not actually having the release date for the one comic I’m looking for (seriously, me and my frustrations with the Marvel website go waaaaaayyyy back).

My original guess was that it didn’t cover digital comics at all, but having checked it again today, it does actually list at least one Infinite title, so IDEK. Split Second is listed under the Marvel digital comic store, and on comiXology, both of which list the release date as the 20th, but mysteriously hasn’t actually been released yet on either. Being as new to digital comics as you, I have no real idea whether this kind of snafu happens regularly with new series or not. I can only presume someone’s dropped the ball big time on the back end somewhere, and the fact it’s not on the calendar and not in the store yet are connected.

Oh yeah Hercules is straight, suuuuuure.
