Something fucked up about the original Loki & Eldred storyline is that Odin WAS keeping tabs on Loki and chose not to intervene (suspecting something bad would happen to him) to teach him a lesson.
I've never understood what that golden and red thing by Odin's feet is. Is it a whopee cushion? Because if that's the prank Odin sent Loki to the dungeons for as a "fair" punishment, that's very cruel of him...
Or is the prank just never specified and that red and golden thing is something else?
Some Thor stan account on TWT (the one I fucking hate) keeps bitching about the new Marvel Voices issue centered on the og comics!Loki as a child because it frames Odin as queerphobic, and that's "character assassination" like urghh. Just STFU! Villain queer-coding was a huge part of Loki's framing throughout the entirety of their appearances!
According to this people, anything framing Loki sympathetically in comics is "character assassination" of the other character. Odin had Loki bound and stripped as venom fell into his eyes in many of the comic runs... And if Odin eventually told Loki that he loves them as they are (while King!Loki angrily states he was never told that; which has closeted undertones and subtext), that doesn't negate the millennia of cruelty they endured just because he was accepting for once. There are plenty of cases of people whose parents were queerphobic who eventually became more accepting. That doesn't erase the past treatment.
AS IF there aren't 50+ years of comics issues where Loki is framed in the most uncharitable and un-nuanced way possible! When I got into Marvel!Loki from watching the movies and a cartoon, those were the only kind of comic issues available, and on top of that, people made gross queerphobic jokes about MCU!Loki, so fuck off!
The Hulk cartoon is low quality from a plot and character perspective, but its failure to take things to their logical conclusion accidentally validated one of my grimdark HCs about Thor and Loki's childhoods. Notably, that despite being royalty, they technically do fall under child soldier territory because they're retrieving dangerous magical artifacts on Odin's behalf. And they kneel in front of him.
This is not one of my HCs and I consider specific to this cartoon, but it's nightmare fuel. The episode also implied they're both beholden to whoever gains control of Odin's spear, Gungnir. But it does remind me that in the myths, oaths made with Gungnir can't be broken. So were they forced to make an oath? D:

I don't know if this is a hot take, but I genuinely consider Odin from Tales of Asgard cartoon a good father. He's a lot softer than other Marvel!Odins and actually does come off as well-meaning.
