Marriage in Islam: Traditions, Rituals, and Blessings
Introduction:-
Islam, however, deems marriage to be a sacramental and a traditional union. It has been used as a tool to meet spiritual needs and worldly demands as well as being the source of love, companionship, and perpetuation of the human race. Islamic marriage or "Nikah" is considered to be a civil contract between two consenting parties with the presence of witnesses. Although customs and traditions vary in different cultures of Islam, fundamental principles are always the same.
Key Principles of Islamic Marriage:-
Consent:- Both the bride and groom should give their free and willing consent to the marriage.
Mahr:- The groom is obliged to give the bride a gift as a token of respect and commitment.
Witnesses:- The marriage contract must be witnessed by at least two adult Muslim males or one adult Muslim male and two adult Muslim females.
Khitbah (Proposal):- It is presented by the groom or his family to the bride's family, making a formal proposal.
Aqd (Contract):- It is the ceremony when the contract is written and the marriage is legally endorsed.
Traditional Customs and Rituals:-
Pre-Wedding:- Many traditions involve a celebratory night with the bride for applying henna. Friends and family gather in anticipation of joy and paint the bride's hands and feet with henna.
Wedding Banquet:- Traditionally a wedding banquet. A feast of food and banter and joyous cheer ensues on a gathering of nears and dear ones.
Walima:- Traditionally, walima or groom's dinner where the groom's family hosts another feast as a celebration of a wedding.
Dowry:- Not required in Islam, but could be there in a society where dowry exists, which is the custom of giving some presents by the bride's family to the groom.
Contemporary views:-
In this modern era, Islamic marriages remain dynamic while remaining true to its core values. Many couples include modern elements within the marriage, but respect old values.
