Calling Antony amimetos ("inimitable") wasn't just poetic; it was likely an inside joke tied to the amimetobioi (the "Inimitable Livers"), an elite, hedonistic club centered around Antony and Cleopatra that specialized in extravagant banquets and Dionysiac revelry.
Whether poking fun at his legendary nightlife or celebrating his devotion to the Egyptian queen, this rare piece of epigraphic evidence proves that Antony’s contemporaries viewed his romantic and social escapades as nothing less than legendary.
He radically defied traditional Roman sexual norms by unapologetically embracing total pleasure, romance, and excess rather than practicing republican self-mastery. While conventional Roman ideology demanded that a freeborn man exercise strict discipline and viewed consuming passion as a dangerous loss of authority and masculine virtue, Antony rejected this framework entirely. Surrounded by his inner circle in Alexandria, he leaned into an hedonistic lifestyle where unbridled indulgence in love and pleasure were celebrated rather than hidden. This defiant ethos culminated in his partnership with Cleopatra, transforming his reputation from a traditional Roman general into the ultimate titan of love and pleasure, famously immortalized by his contemporaries as "inimitable in love".
