I feel so silly talking to people about Ancient Rome (mostly Mark Antony) because I know 99% of the time they want me to shut up
But I love Mark Antony too much so I will not be shutting up
Mark Antony coins I’ve stumbled upon if anyone cares
Fun fact: Mark Antony, disguised as a slave, returned to his wife Fulvia pretending he had a message about her husband (Antony). When Fulvia started to worry that he was killed, Antony revealed his identity, threw his arms around her and kissed her.
JULIA: Mother of the Triumvir
Marble statue of a Roman matron, 1st century BC.
She was born in 104 BC. (possibly) into the illustrious Julii clan. She was the daughter of Lucius Julius Caesar (Consul in 90 BC) and Fulvia. She was sister to Lucius Julius Caesar (Consul in 64 BC). She was a third-cousin of the famous Gaius Julius Caesar.
She married Marcus Antonius (Creticus), and they had three sons and a daughter: the famous Marcus Antony, Gaius Antonius, and Lucius Antonius and Antonia.
Her husband died when their sons were still young, leaving Julia to navigate the complexities of Roman society as a high-status widow. However, she soon married Publius Cornelius Lentulus Sura and the family moved into her new husband's home.
She tried to protect the interests of her family by appealing to people of the municipalities on behalf of Antony to stop the senate from declaring him a public enemy.
During the Triumvirate, when proscriptions were sweeping Rome, she personally ensured the safety of her brother, Lucius Julius Caesar, shielding him from her son’s hit lists. By managing her own house and keeping these high-status allies alive, she prevented Antony from alienating the entirety of the traditional Roman aristocracy.
After the fall of Perusia, when the situation in Italy became untenable, she fled to Sicily to seek refuge with Sextus Pompeius. By doing this, she essentially forced a connection between herself and the naval power of the time, eventually ensuring her safe passage back to her son, Mark Antony. It was a move of pure survival, moving her from a potential hostage of Octavian to a free agent who could reunite with her son’s forces.
She disappears from historical records after this point.
