JULIA: Mother of the Triumvir
Marble statue of a Roman matron, 1st century BC.
She was born in 104 BC. (possibly) into the illustrious Julii clan. She was the daughter of Lucius Julius Caesar (Consul in 90 BC) and Fulvia. She was sister to Lucius Julius Caesar (Consul in 64 BC). She was a third-cousin of the famous Gaius Julius Caesar.
She married Marcus Antonius (Creticus), and they had three sons and a daughter: the famous Marcus Antony, Gaius Antonius, and Lucius Antonius and Antonia.
Her husband died when their sons were still young, leaving Julia to navigate the complexities of Roman society as a high-status widow. However, she soon married Publius Cornelius Lentulus Sura and the family moved into her new husband's home.
She tried to protect the interests of her family by appealing to people of the municipalities on behalf of Antony to stop the senate from declaring him a public enemy.
During the Triumvirate, when proscriptions were sweeping Rome, she personally ensured the safety of her brother, Lucius Julius Caesar, shielding him from her son’s hit lists. By managing her own house and keeping these high-status allies alive, she prevented Antony from alienating the entirety of the traditional Roman aristocracy.
After the fall of Perusia, when the situation in Italy became untenable, she fled to Sicily to seek refuge with Sextus Pompeius. By doing this, she essentially forced a connection between herself and the naval power of the time, eventually ensuring her safe passage back to her son, Mark Antony. It was a move of pure survival, moving her from a potential hostage of Octavian to a free agent who could reunite with her son’s forces.
She disappears from historical records after this point.
Audrey Hobert songs as Ancient Romans:
Sue Me - ok anthem of the empire because those people were litigious, but I’m gonna go with Mark Antony because being a saint is exhausting (aka screw the republic go for the crown), he just wants to be wanted (as emperor), and the Second Triumvirate is basically a ménage-a-trois.
Bowling Alley - Tiberius. “I don’t think anyone cares if I go or not,” is his irrelevant childhood in Marcellus’ shadow. His Emperor career started off strong with rumors his mom poisoned every heir (including Marcellus) in his way. For a big nerdy loner it’s giving, “It's a choice, or am I cursed? It's a toss-up” not to mention “I take the trophy and I Irish goodbye” is giving him ditching Rome for his introvert island.
Thirst Trap - Caligula. Literally the opening lines “So I’m crazy? That’s usually not my thing bitch I’m crazy. Suspicious and insane, can you blame me?” He was paranoid, but not paranoid enough to avoid the assassination plot was he?? “I’m taking thirst traps in the mirror in my room, I think I look bad so I take a hundred.” I think a lot of Caligula’s evilness comes from a place of insecurity. And the fact that everyone called him by his childhood nickname. “But now I listen to my playlists and pretend I’m you,” is him pretending to be Caesar because who doesn’t?
Phoebe - Claudius. Listen. Whether or not he was involved in Caligula’s assassination, these lyrics fit his journey to emperor: “a man in a suit told me you’re gonna be a star, I said yeah I know, but it came out like ‘What who me?!’” The first 30 years of his life being hidden away by his family because of his deformity fits the lyrics, “guess I don’t have it after all, but it’s okay, cause my life is so exciting… what took me so long, I say to no one, cause I’m alone all the time.” And I have to add, “I’d rather be lonely, counted out and homely, I know that he’ll need me, once he gets to know me.”
A hero doesn't deceive or play games to win. He stands up for what he believes in and falls so that his soul shall be preserved from the corruption of power.
This Antony art from Total War: Rome II is so sexy, so manly! I am obsessed!

hello! just curious as to whether or not you’re staying up to date with the football World Cup. and if you are: are there any teams you’re rooting for specifically? which teams do you think Antony would be rooting for at this stage of the tournament? many thanks!
I keep track of the results. I was supporting Germany but they are out. So I am supporting Argentina now. I think Antony would have supported Egypt since Italy didn't qualify. Argentina defeated Egypt only a few hours ago. I think he will support Argentina too like me at this stage. 😁
Cleopatra Sails Ashore To Meet Antony, circa 1900
First official meeting of Antony and Cleopatra, shown in a painting by Gustave Wertheim. Antony and his men wait on shore as the royal Cleopatra arrives with her attendants on a boat. Water nymphs frolic, blessing their meeting.
Here is the colored version.
