We still say the same thing around this time, but again it bears repeating: Hackaday has been a great year.

We tackled a broader range of topics this year than ever before, and judging by the record-setting figures we saw in feedback, it seems that you were as excited to read it as we were to publish it.

Let's take a look at some of 2019's most famous and fascinating headlines to close the year.

A BEVY OF NEW BOARDS In June we saw Raspberry Pi 4's somewhat shocking debut. This Pi may have needed a little more time in the oven as it turns out.

We started to find some pretty odd quirks after hackers got their hands on them. A number of exciting improvements to the strong device have been included since then, but the finding that the Atomic Pi was originally leftover hardware bought from the now-bankrupt Mayfield Robotics raised some valid questions about the product's long-term feasibility.

Of note, no device has gotten us as happy as the Hackaday Superconference Badge this year. Due to a wide number of projects, goods and even conference passes, the use of FPGAs and significant changes in open source toolchains, we will look back on 2019 as the year more hackers have had to play with an FPGA it was the first time.

If there is any hint about the ventures that came out of the Badge Hacking series, we think they liked it. LET THERE BE LIGHT Despite the perennial interest in such things, not a pocket-sized Linux computer was the most talked-about hardware this year. Okay, the state-of-the-art home lighting systems in particular.

As of this writing, Ted Yapo's amazing deep-dive into the often troubling reality of modern LED bulbs was our most popular piece of 2019. We have all experienced LED bulbs doing dark years before their advertised lifespan is up, and this article aimed at finding out what continues to kill these solids marvels of the 21st-century enlightenment of the solid-state.

We also saw growing doubt about the health of so-called "Smart" light bulbs, or, more importantly, their absence. The finding that many of these bulbs held clear-text WiFi passwords of the customer was made all the worse when we learned how easy it was to get physical access to the microcontrollers that drive the latest generation of Internet-connected bulbs.
