Notice how Mare and Cal fight at every RQ book? I mean I get it, it would be boring if they don't, but the pattern's always the same. Or, at least in RQ and GS they were. They fight because of their different ideals and the fact that their love isn't enough to change either of them. Cal being a, uh, practical Silver asshole and Mare being... the revolution. Or, yeah. And in none of the books have they gotten the chance to talk about it. Not to the point where the issue can be counted as resolved, that is. Always, nearing the end of the book, something major happens and each of them being alive is suddenly more important than this overdue talk. It's one of the story's main conflict, I get it - would he abandon all of his ideals to be with her? But KC was different. They fought at the end. And just as there should've been nothing left to stand in the way of them being together, there should be nothing left to get in them resolving this. Victoria Aveyard has made them forgot about it in every book's start, only for the issue to pop up again towards the end, but in RQ4 the issue will still be there, raw and bitter, right at the start. And they have to work trough it, the way they never had to in any of the previous books. I hope Cal ends up choosing Mare. Not just because I'm high key obsessed with the couple, but also because if he doesn't, then that would mean after the events told in four books, Cal would have had no, freaking, character development, at all. He wants to be a more just ruler at the start of RQ who sort of believes in equality but does not think it worth risking the stability of his kingdom for. And he wants the crown. Obv. If he still ends up choosing the crown, then NOTHING would have changed. I don't know if that's the whole point, that people don't really change, but. Ack. Of course Victoria could again add another twist and have him die but - Please don't do that I'm sorry
