Astorga is at the edge of the Maragarteria, a rugged area difficult to farm. The Maragatos were famed throughout Spain for their unusual costume and as carters who travelled many hundreds of kilometers from home to make a living. One of the higher pinnacles of the cathedral at Astorga is topped by this sculpture.
