A detailed picture of one of the most beautiful pocket maps of New York made in the 19th century: Colton’s Thirty-Three Miles Around the City of New York. It covers New York City and vicinity as far south as Ocean County, New Jersey, as far east as Suffolk County, as far north as Rockland County, and as far west as Somerset County. Surrounded by a splendid decorative border with engraved views depicting “City Hall, New York” and “City Hall, Brooklyn”. Published by J.H Colton and Drawn by G.W.Colton, the year 1847 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⏳ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ G. W. & C. B. Berwick upon Tweed has recently undergone a rebranding exercise with @HemingwayDesign ( yes, THAT Mr Wayne Hemingway & THOSE groovy designers) and the town was just getting a crack at trying out the new identity with town’s tourism offering ( yep, talk about bad timing). And I got a chance to work with the project through the new town map. This was one of the first visual projects to be derived from the creative work generated by the agency- which was a real honour for Judith Booth #boothcreative and myself. We love the new brand, so it was great fun to test-drive the colour palette and the fonts for something new, whilst staying true to the core identity ( you can see the lovely shiny new Hemingway place brand identity at the end of the pics & www.visitberwick.com) This map was launched the week before lockdown and like so many tourism projects around the world, it’ll be mothballed until all this is over. This lovely 1851 map was hand colored with watercolors. It’s interesting to see how certain colors (blue and green) have caused the paper to darken.
