Walnuts
K and I spent quite a while yesterday picking black walnuts. I have a couple of batter bread recipes that I would adapt, but decided just for fun to look up maple/walnut on the internet. The first result I clicked on, the first sentence:
"Maple is usually known as a fall flavor because that’s when maple-flavored products are produced and also when the leaves change colors."
Nope, nope, nope! If the lady doesn't know that maple sugaring is done at the ass-end of winter into the earliest part of spring, then I'm not even going to talk to her. And just what the heck does 'leaves changing color' have to do with maple flavoring in recipes. Now, nuts are typically regarded as a fall/winter ingredient, because that's when they are gathered. I. Argh.
I think I'm going to dig out my mom's old cranberry/nut bread recipe, go heavier on the nuts, sub raisins for cranberries, and sweeten with maple instead of white sugar (adjusting the water added to account for the difference in sweetener)
AND I'm going to be a grump about it the whole time.

it's almost sugaring time!! the weather forecasts show a period of days above freezing and nights below in the next week or so which means it's time for us to start tapping trees for sap :))
