After some days plagued with bursts of depression/anxiety, I have returned

Since August 22th is Folklore Day - I know I am a little late - I decided to make a “bestiary” based on Brazilian Folklore. The original idea was one drawing for day throughout August but I, of course, had some problems and decided to make only 20 drawings until the end of the month. These are the first 6. All of them have more detailed descriptions on my instagram

And for those who are wondering, the Brazilian werewolf does not turn into a classic werewolf, but a hybrid of a human and the last animal that propped itself where it layed, being more commonly a “werepig” or “weredog” or even an unrecognizable chimera.

The mapinguari is a cryptid said to dwell in the Amazon rainforest. It is described as a tall, ape-like creature with red fur, one eye, and a mouth in its belly. It is said to have long, sloth-like arms that are strong enough to rend trees asunder.

The mapinguari is said to be slow, but very dangerous. It can move throught the rainforest without noise, and will emit a loud shriek only seconds before it attacks. It is said to dislike bodies of water, and will avoid rivers and lagoons.

It is said to be carnivorous, but prefers livestock to eating humans. In 1937, a report from Brazil claimed that a mapinguari had gone on a three week rampage, killing over one hundred cows.
