I'm finishing up my Mapillary biking-mapping project. For the last 20 months, I've been riding on every street around me with a GoPro (360 degree camera) on my bike helmet. The blue lines on these maps show my path of travel.

At this point, I've covered more than 3500 miles over 220 rides and captured about 830k 3D images. I've really enjoyed exploring and seeing so many beautiful areas of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The remote hilly areas are especially beautiful, but also quite challenging. Another benefit has been discovering some excellent bakeries and coffee shops while I'm getting more daily exercise.

Sometime in 2023, I started using Mapillary.com for mapping street level detail, which is not visible from an OSM satellite image.

That lead me to buy a GoPro Max 360 camera and record my own bike trips across San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. About a year and a half later, I had recorded more than 3000 miles of local streets.

Neulich habe ich auf einer ca. 30 minütigen Autofahrt mein Handy an die Sonnenblende geklemmt und die Fahrstrecke mit Mapillary “aufgezeichnet”. Hab den Dienst “Mapillary” entdeckt und dabei handelt es sich um eine “Open Source StreetView oder LookAround” Alternative, bei der die User mit ihren Smartphone Strecken abfahren, dabei Fotos machen und diese im Anschluss hochladen können.
