Today marks the anniversary of the CIA-backed assassination of Burkina Faso's President Thomas Sankara. Rumors of his assassination point to the forces of his former colleague Blaise Compaoré backed by the social-democratic president of France François Mitterrand, and also to the US backed Charles Taylor of the Settler-colonial state of Liberia. In either case, Imperialism's reaction to Sankara is a testament to his Revolutionary fervor.
He was one of the most successful Marxists-Leninists Africa has ever seen, in terms of what he accomplished for and with his people.
Within four years, Sankara transformed Burkina Faso from a poor country Neo-colonial nation, dependent on Western imperialism, to an economically independent and socially progressive nation. By redistributing land from the feudal landlords who sided with Imperialism and giving it directly to local peasants revolution in rural areas made leaps in social relations. Sankara nationalized oil wealth and used the money to double school attendance and half infant mortality.
Sankara's feminist policies propelled women into the forefront of the struggle in a patriarchal neo-colonial society, unleashing women as a mighty force for the revolution. While taking many commandist errors, and not separating the party from the gun, Still Sankara is a testament to the overlapping of National Liberation, Anti-colonial Resistance success with Communist leadership.

Revolutionary groups staged a lightning rally from Carriedo St. to Recto Ave. in Manila to mark the 45th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). The CPP was established on December 26, 1968, and leads one the longest-running communist insurgencies in the world. In a show of force last December 19, around 300 members of various revolutionary groups hailed the "advance" of the Philippine revolution, the establishment of a "democratic people's government" in the countryside, and said that the seizure of political power by revolutionary forces, led by workers and peasants (symbolized by the hammer and sickle) was the only way to solve poverty.
