Suzette Smith will present CE/ZE: Appendices — notes from her research on the disappearance of 7th-grade girls Honey Czarny and Amelia Smith. The story of their disappearance inspired the comic Ce/Ze which was published by Sparkplug Comics in April 2015.

Manny Layers

Ew! is an intergalactic being from another time and dimension. Ew! celebrates their gender and identity, transcending human cultural norms. Ew! sings in their native language, which is impossible to write in any human language. An homage to Hugo Ball and the bar scene in the original Star Wars film, Ew! hopes to bring life and love to their human community.

Ew! is a sound, video and live performance project by Portland artist Manny Layers (Manny Sáenz-Reyes), a Queer Chicano sound and performance artist from downtown Las Vegas. His art explores identity, and the tension between masculine and feminine cultural ideals. Manny has performed at the Portland Art Museum, Disjecta, PNCA, Hollywood Theatre, and the Risk/Reward Festival in Portland; ATA and San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery in San Francisco; and Pehrspace and The Smell in Los Angeles. Manny is a founding member of post-punk quartet Atole, PSU’s student organization Time Arts Club, and Portland’s longest-running showcase for local electronic music, Supernature. He participated in Signal Fire Artist Residency, and has curated a variety of arts festivals, such as Tropix and SuperFest! Manny studied film, theater and art at Hunter College, City University of New York, and is a 2015 graduate for MFA in Contemporary Art Practice at Portland State University.

Michelle Overby

Michelle Overby grew up in eastern Washington, moving to Portland, OR in 2001. She studied linguistics and creative writing at Portland State University. Michelle keeps the blog The Rose and the Apple where she has posted daily haiku for nearly 5 years. She published her first book of poetry with Two Plum Press entitled I Stayed Up Listening in November 2014. She is a wife and mother to two daughters.

Writing a new artist statement can be a difficult task, there are whole college courses out there on the subject. My experience in writing is in the field of journalism, literature, theater and film.  Much like my live and visual art- I enjoy writing with honesty and a little bit of theater and flare.
