How to Prepare Vishu Kani at Home – A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
Vishu is one of the most special festivals celebrated in Kerala. It marks the Malayalam New Year and begins with the beautiful tradition called Vishu Kani. The word Kani means “the first thing seen.” On Vishu morning, people wake up and see the Vishu Kani first, which is believed to bring prosperity, happiness, and good luck for the entire year.
Preparing the Vishu Kani at home is simple if you arrange the traditional items properly the night before Vishu.
1. Choose the Right Place
First, select a clean and quiet place in your home, usually the pooja room or a sacred corner. This is where the Vishu Kani will be arranged. Make sure the area is neat and decorated beautifully.
2. Place a Brass Uruli or Plate
Take a brass uruli or a traditional bowl and place it in the centre. This vessel will hold most of the Vishu Kani items. Brass items are commonly used because they represent tradition and prosperity.
3. Add Raw Rice as the Base
Fill the uruli with raw rice. Rice symbolises abundance and prosperity. It also helps hold the other items in place.
4. Place Fruits and Vegetables

6. Keep the Aranmula Kannadi
Place an Aranmula Kannadi (traditional metal mirror) near the arrangement. It reflects the Vishu Kani and symbolises prosperity and self-reflection.
A Krishna idol or Vishnu idol is usually placed at the center of the Vishu Kani. This represents divine blessings and protection for the new year.
Place gold ornaments, coins, or money near the arrangement. These items symbolise wealth and success in the coming year.
A Nilavilakku (traditional lamp) is placed beside the Vishu Kani. The lamp is usually lit early in the morning before seeing the Kani. The light represents positivity and the removal of darkness.
10. Cover and See the Kani in the Morning
Once the arrangement is complete, it is kept ready the night before Vishu. In the early morning, the eldest member of the family lights the lamp and gently wakes others so they can see the Vishu Kani first.
